HomeMy WebLinkAboutNon-Discrimination Public Comment from Kimberly McKeehan 5-12-14From:kimberly mckeehan To:Agenda Subject:think of the children Date:Saturday, May 10, 2014 5:06:17 PM My name is Kimberly McKeehan and I am writing to ask you to please create andenact a comprehensive nondiscrimination ordinance for the equal protection of ourLGBTQ neighbors as well as the elevation of our community. Inasmuch as law is the sacred narrative of our time and you are charged, much asthe judges in Hebrew Bible were charged, to decide who is included in our story, Iurge you to include all people. You have been charged to make that law reflect thetruth of humanity. Who will you include in this truth? Don't let your facetiousunderstanding of gay sexuality, your moral confusion, or your desire for campaignmoney obscure that truth. Instead of asking what meager accommodations we can offer their request, why notopen our arms wide and cradle this population who has so clearly come throughshame and pain only to stand before you and get more of the same? If you can’t imagine wrapping your arms around one of these adults, how aboutimagining the children who you are about to leave unprotected in the way of thosewho would tell them that their very being is against the laws of god and nature? Please let the laws of this city embrace the ones who bravely stand in front of usand ask permission to be themselves in public. I know you must go to your God and ask for guidance, but when you come backremember that yours is not the only message from God and this law is not the onlylaw. There is a law here that doesn't ask permission but seeks expression in everymoment. That truth must come to light. Any word you use that does not reflect our unbroken human connection and ourresponsibility to each other is wrong. The world is changing fast and we don't havetime for arguments against unity and cooperation. Thank you for listening.
