HomeMy WebLinkAboutNon-Discrimination Ordinance Public Comment from John Brandt, Jr. 4-7-14From:John Brandt To:Jeff Krauss; Carson Taylor; Chris Mehl; Cyndy Andrus; I-Ho Pomeroy Cc:Agenda Subject:Bozeman non-discrimination ordinance Date:Sunday, April 06, 2014 8:59:50 AM Good morning Mayor Krauss and Council Members Taylor, Mehl, Andrus, & Pomeroy, I understand that you will soon be considering a non-discrimination ordinance for the city of Bozeman. Don’t we already have laws that protect people from discrimination based on race, religion, gender, age or disability? It seems to me that covers everyone. I can’t think of a single living person who does not fall into one or more of those categories, can you? Given that, why would it be necessary to add another category to this list - isn’t that a tad bit redundant? I do not believe that any ordinance should include non-discrimation based upon sexual orientation. Why should a person’s sexual orientation enter into the equation at all and their sexual orientation be granted special privileges? At what point does it become reverse-discrimation? It used to be that a person was considered judicious or discerning when they were termed “discriminating.” If a person walks into your place of business and you feel uncomfortable with them because of their outward appearance (i.e. slovenly or whatever standards you have set for your place of business) or your intuition simply tells you that you should not hire that person, should you be sued and the onus of non-discrimination proof be placed upon you because they feel they’re being discriminated against? I would appreciate it if you would seriously answer that question. Please understand that I have had several gay friends throughout my life - I don’t judge people based upon their sexual preference and I don’t expect to be judged upon mine. People are people - there are good and evil in every race, religion, gender and age. Simply because Butte, Helena, Missoula or any other city burdens their citizens with another statute does not mean that Bozeman should follow suit.
