Many of the entangled networks of pipes, manholes, and valves have been in use and buried under local roadways for more than 80 years! By properly planning and replacing aged infrastructure water main breaks, sewage overflows, and road failures are significantly reduced. The City of Bozeman’s GIS Department has recently developed a new tool that will improve the city’s project selection and prioritization process. Using compiled data, this application will allow officials to efficiently plan and manage over fifty-thousand assets and thousands of replacement projects designed to keep your faucets flowing and your toilets draining (open to the public, see additional resources below to explore the tool!). Current Work: Two extensive data collection efforts are currently underway. By the end of 2014, highly detailed citywide street condition and updated wastewater distribution system data will be added to help improve the accuracy of this tool. This new information will be joined into a database that already contains over one-thousand projects. Future Goals: This analysis will save the City of Bozeman and its residents millions of dollars over time by maximizing the life-span of city-owned assets. The GIS Department will be training city staff on this new tool throughout the next year. Consistent maintenance and the addition of new data will also be completed to ensure all projects are updated and current. Within 5 years, GIS staff hopes this tool will be incorporated into all new projects in order to ensure a strategic and data driven approach forward.
