Project Background: Stormwater has been
recognized nation-wide as a major contributor to
fresh water pollution. Sediment, soaps, oils, trash,
fertilizers, and animal waste are a few of the many
pollutants carried and dumped into rivers when it
rains on local streets. Committed stormwater
programs within municipalities work to effectively
address pollution sources and harmful practices. In
2012, the City of Bozeman’s GIS department was
tasked with mapping the entire stormwater system using GPS and GIS technologies to improve the
efficiency of Bozeman’s Stormwater Program. City staff, engineers, developers, planners, and residents
will have access to this data once the project is completed and use it daily to inform stormwater
management decisions into the future.
Current Work: To date, over 3,000 hours have been spent by City of Bozeman staff identifying and
mapping 10,000+ stormwater features and studying 22 miles of underground pipe! Features mapped
include stormwater manholes, underground pipes, inlets, outfalls, detention ponds, ditches, and culverts.
There is more to go! While much of the system is now mapped, city staff is still working to understand
the current condition of all of the features above and below ground.
Future Goals: As Bozeman continues to grow, it is critical that time is spent maintaining established
data-sets and adding features for all new subdivisions and businesses. GIS personnel spend time each
week mapping all these infrastructures in order to ensure the most current data is available for use.
