HomeMy WebLinkAboutOutcome, Dog Waste TopicHow can the city and its citizens better encourage and support the picking up of dog waste in the city? Outcome Many Ideas Implemented Thank you to everyone who visited Bozeman Online City Hall. We really appreciate your insights and ideas! A report was generated with all of the comments and forwarded on to appropriate city staff, the non-profit Run Dog Run and the City Commission. Themes that emerged from the comments and suggestions centered mainly on education, advertising, encouraging responsibility, enforcement and cleanup. Several actions have been taken or are planned for implementation to respond to the themes from your suggestions. Advertising/Education/Encouragement Run Dog Run has recorded public service radio announcements that are currently airing on KGLT as well as the TownSquare Media network of stations. The city then took the audio announcement and combined it with video for airing on Charter Channel 20 (the city broadcast channel), the city webpage and Facebook. The city is also airing the video created by MSU Extension Water Quality regarding some of the causes of pollution in our waterways (including dog waste) on Channel 20 regularly. Encouragement We also believe that the new Lend-A-Leash program may help with the issue of dog waste because when people have their dogs constrained they are much more likely to notice when their dog goes to the bathroom and will not have to go far to pick it up. Enforcement Plans have been made to begin putting the public on notice through web articles and press releases that animal control will begin periodic increased monitoring of the trails and dog parks and ticketing those that fail to clean up after their pets. Cleanup Run Dog Run is planning four different Scoop the Poop events for 2014 at Burke Park, Snowfill, the Gallatin Regional Park and Sourdough Canyon Trail. There is always plenty of poop to scoop so be sure and get in touch with them if you would like to volunteer to help out. As we discuss further possibilities related to your suggestions and the conversations and ideas they have generated or if the City Commission has policy discussions regarding the issue we will post here again and send out another e-mail to all the participants on this subject. Thanks again for participating. Please look for another online city hall topic coming out soon. We would love to hear from you again.
