Dear Bozeman City Commissioners:
I am writing to you in my official capacity as President and CEO of Shape Up America! to urge your approval of funding for the proposed Story Mill Park.
With more than 30 years of experience raising awareness of obesity as a health issue, I would like to re-frame the urgent need to protect open space and provide recreational opportunities for residents of the City of Bozeman. An investment in the Story Mill Park is a solid investment in good health as well as a good investment from an economic perspective.
When the U.S. Surgeon General published a landmark report on physical activity and health in 1996, we learned that making it possible for people to play outside is one simple way to promote health because people are more physically active outside. For this reason, parks, trails and open spaces can be viewed as health resource.
