HomeMy WebLinkAboutReappointments to the Bicycle Advisory Board Commission Memorandum REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission FROM: Aimee Brunckhorst, Deputy City Clerk Stacy Ulmen CMC, City Clerk SUBJECT: Reappointments to the Bozeman Area Bicycle Advisory Board MEETING DATE: December 19, 2013 MEETING TYPE: Action RECOMMENDATION: I move to reappoint or appoint [up to five applicants] to the Bozeman Area Bicycle Advisory Board. BACKGROUND: Six terms on the Bicycle Advisory Board expire December 31st. All the board members with expiring terms except the non-voting High School representative have applied for another term. One new application has been received. None of the applicants qualify for the non-voting High School representative position. One new application has been received. The Bozeman Area Bicycle Advisory Board (BABAB) was created by the City Commission in September 1990 (Resolution No. 2817). Its purpose is to recommend safe bicycle practices throughout Bozeman in regard to enhanced bicycle circulation and design, community-wide bicycle education and safety programs, and other matters relating to bicycling in the Bozeman area. Bozeman Municipal Code Sec. 2.05.2510 Membership. A. The bicycle advisory board shall consist of up to 11 voting members and one non-voting liaison to be appointed by the city commission. One member shall be a student of Montana State University. One member representing the county may be recommended by the county commission and appointed by the city commission. One additional non-voting liaison shall be a student of Bozeman High School. Members of this board shall serve two-year staggered terms. Each member may be reappointed without any limitation on the number of reappointments. Vacancies shall be filled in the same manner as original appointments for the balance of the term remaining. B. With the exception of the non-voting high school liaison, only persons of legal age may be appointed to the board. High school representatives under age 18 must provide a signed consent from a legal guardian stating they may participate in board activities. A majority of the board shall be residents of the city. Nonresident members of the board shall have some interest in the city by virtue of working in the city, owning property in the city, or entering the city frequently for any lawful purpose. In addition, the members should be knowledgeable of bicycling and/or traffic safety in the Bozeman area. This board has six terms expiring December 31st, with five reapplying members and one new applicant. None of the applicants qualify for the non-voting High School position. For the previous two years I have been actively volunteering as the coordinator for the Eagle Mount Cycling Club, and in May I was voted in as a member of the Bozeman Bike Kitchen Board. I have been an avid cyclist for more than a decade and have remained heavily involved in the cycling communities everywhere I have lived. My passion and ambition about cycling is demonstrated in my lifestyle and I am always looking for ways to increase knowledge surrounding the sport. I believe I can bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm and creativity to BABAB. I also lived in the Netherlands for 3 years where I was part of one of the most complete cycling cultures in the world. I am a manager at Costco Wholesale and know many of the Bozeman business owners. Have helped organize Bike to Work Week in 2012 and 2013. Have also promoted Bike to Work Month, Week and Day for the Bozeman Costco in 2012 and 2013. Organized Bike to Eat day in 2013. Have volunteered quite a few hours at the Bozeman Bike Kitchen.
