HomeMy WebLinkAboutBretson Bicycle Board Application 12-09Application for the Bicycle Advisory Board: Fill out the following information and click send to apply for the Bicycle Advisory board.   Date: 11 December, 2009 Name: Steven Gregory Bretson   Physical Address: 120 N 10th Avenue, Bozeman, MT 59715 Email:  steve@flogrey.com Phone(s): 406 579 7333   Length of time in the Bozeman area: resident of 10 years   Occupation: Designer  Employer: Massive Studios   Have you ever served on a City or County board?  (Yes/No) No (If so, where, what board, and how long?)     Please explain your relevant qualifications, interests, and experiences. I've been a resident of Bozeman for the past 10 years prior to living here I grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis. Just in the past two years, I purchased a home here in downtown Bozeman and I'm very excited and feel very fortunate to be able to become an even more integral part of the community I never had any trouble loving. I've spent 26 out of 30 years of my life as a competitive cyclist in nearly all cycling disciplines. In that time it has shown me more than I could have ever imagined and I'm not about to slow down now. I've worn many hats within the cycling industry from Professional athlete, team director, program director, head mechanic, retail buyer, coach, consultant, movie stunt double, and most recently production editor of a national cycling publication and Operations Director, an unofficial but agreed upon title, for the Bozeman Bike Kitchen. Other current community cycling efforts include hosting - with a small group, several sold-out cycling film premieres at the Emerson in benefit of local organizations - We hope to have another this spring. I've also had the great opportunity to work with the Bicycle advisory board on a few several occasions during the annual bike week, and have helped to bridge the gap between some of the other cycling groups and the Board, so we can be moving together rather than separately. I ride my bicycle as my main form of transportation 365 days a year, as I have for the past decade -- but I am not out of touch from the average person who uses an automobile as their sole form of daily transportation. One of the things that makes me a good designer (my day job) is I have the ability to step away from my personal beliefs to see how someone else might see and interpret my ideas, and to find a balance that hopefully will include everyone within the target audience. I understand the grievances that Cyclists, Drivers, and the general public have against any certain concept. I like to think that I always try to apply an un-biased opinion. I hope to help our Community develop a strong cycling base with the resourses we absolutely require, and hopefully a few nice extras along the way.  I've  recently been asked to direct the development of an area mountain bike club as a branch of the Gallatin Valley Bicycle Club. They have started to understand that they might be too biased to certain areas of cycling and have been alienating a very important group of cyclists, allowing Mountain bikers to have to develop their own relationships and views on their own, which can be a decent thing, but has started to get out of hand with younger cyclists building unauthorized trails within forest service land and having user conflicts with other groups on trails. What I hope to do is develop a new club over this winter to bring in all these younger riders and older more responsible cyclists to have an externally social aspect, in hopes to give us a new foundation to develop leadership, mentorship, and an effective vehicle to get information on trail usage changes, workdays, and legislation concerns to the mountain bike public. I have been told, and even though my modesty would deny - I do see, that I am a very well respected and looked up-to individual in our cycling community here and also on an international level. Being I've competed in anything from the X-Games as a BMXer, Downhill and Road Racing, I've been told that many of the young kids want to be me when they grow up, and the older generations respect me for my responsibility, mutual respect, future vision and ability to be a leader to all generations. I only hope that I can continue to live up to the expectations given to me by my community peers.  Along with cycling, I'm an avid skier, climber, sportsman and woodworker. Other past interests have been motorcycle and auto racing, but those are frankly too expensive for this homeowner to continue. I would love the opportunity to help shape and lead the community I love. Thanks for your time and consideration.   References (Individual or Organization)   Please include name and phone for three references.
