HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-25-13 Historic Preservation Advisory Board Minutes Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board—April 25"', 2013
Meeting notes—not minutes, no quorum.
The new Planning Director, Wendy Thomas, came to introduce herself.
Waiting for a quorum: Courtney reported that the Armory project(hotel) is moving forward and looks
good. Developers are showing great respect for the style of the building, and the addition will be in
keeping with the Deco style of the existing facade.
Courtney: never thought we'd see positive movement on the Armory, the Depot, and the East Willson
school all at once.
Depot study event May 9"'—invitations out to VIPs, media interviews scheduled.
Comments on Depot study (draft document): Cindy A. had some questions about the existing funding
and organization around the depot, and suggestions about the next steps. Mark requested that Criterion
C information be added—context of the architectural aspects of the Depot in relation to other depots of
its period.
Courtney reported that the prospective E. Willson developers are going carefully forward, making sure
they will be able to have a functional plan.
More updates: no new grant applications, over 100 COAs already this spring, building permits are way
up also (tripled from 2012). Planning will be adding 1 new staff positiion.
SAT grants progress.
Still no quorum. We asked Wendy to introduce herself, and she told us about her background, which
includes an interest in historic buildings going back to college.
Other agenda items:
Demo reviews: how historic demos should be reviewed. We perceive an issue that the Board is only
asked to "say no". We feel it would be appropriate to provide comment on all demos in the overlay, so
our decisions have more context.
Wendy: City manager has talked about this. The department is trying to find a g000d balance—look at
process, make it better, define better.
Mark: We want to establish consistency.
Board Terms: we need to recruit energetic people to fill the open slots.
We need to keep up with former board members—they could be a resource for us.
Maybe re-start the quarterly newsletter to keep the community engaged with preservation issues. Maybe
an intern? Also ideally need community preservation nonprofit.
Good buyer for historic house on Willson (the run-down one)
S. Tracy house Courtney mentioned last month may be rehabbed.
House on S. Black(N of Anne's) maybe demo? House seems out of place in neighborhood— maybe
moved to that lot?
May meeting? Maybe.
