HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 4488, establishing Fee Structure for Plaques at the Memorial wall in the Cemetery Commission Memorandum
REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission
FROM Mitch Overton, Parks and Recreation Director
Chris Kukulski, City Manager SUBJECT: Establishing Fee Structure for Sunset Hills Memorial Garden
MEETING DATE: November 4, 2013
AGENDA ITEM TYPE: Consent
RECOMMENDATION: That the City Commission approve the fee structure for the Sunset
Hills Memorial Garden. A fee of $300.00 will be assessed for each standardized bronze plaque
(2” x 4”) which includes name of deceased, dates of birth and death, and installation onto the
granite memorial wall. The fee amount was based on rough costs identified for maintenance,
development and affordability.
BACKGROUND: In fiscal year 2011, the City Commission approved $10,000 in the Cemetery
Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for the design and development of a memorial garden. The
concept behind the memorial garden was to provide the public with a lower cost
reflective/remembrance alternative to that of ash and traditional burials. To date, staff has developed the old Cemetery tree nursery into an area of reflection and remembrance by installing
a granite slab, walking trails and benches. Once the fee structure is approved by the City
Commission staff will be ready to accept applications for plaques to be affixed to the Memorial
Garden wall. The Cemetery Advisory Board voted unanimously to approve the fee structure
during the August 29, 2013 meeting.
SUGGESTED MOTION: I hereby move to adopt Resolution No.4488 which opens the Sunset
Hills Memorial Garden and permits placement of standardized plaques on the Memorial Garden
wall for a fee of $300 per plaque.
UNRESOLVED ISSUES: None determined at this time.
ALTERNATIVES: As directed by the City Commission.
FISCAL EFFECTS: A small increase in revenue will be realized with the opening of the Sunset Hills Memorial Garden.
