SUBJECT: Appointment to the Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory
Board MEETING DATE: October 21, 2013

RECOMMENDED MOTION: I move to appoint Bryce Ledbetter to the Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board. BACKGROUND: Six vacancies exist on this board with one new applicant applying for an
at-large position.
The Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board was created under Chapter 2.80 of the Bozeman Municipal Code. This chapter is designed as a measure to establish a local historic
preservation program designed to promote the preservation of historic and prehistoric sites,
structures, objects, buildings, and historic districts by addressing historic preservation issues at
the local level and integrating them into local, state, and federal planning and decision-making processes. The historic preservation program includes identification, evaluation, and protection of historic resources within the city (Ordinance No. 1180, Section 2, 1985).
The Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board shall serve in an advisory capacity to the
City Commission, Planning Board, Zoning Commission, and other staff members or boards seeking advice on historic preservation issues (Ordinance No. 1454, Section 2, 1998; Ordinance No. 1180, Section 3, 1985).
Members are appointed to staggered two-year terms. It is to be comprised of up to fifteen
members: (1) Three or four professional members with professional expertise in the disciplines of history,
planning, archaeology, architecture, architecture history, historic archaeology, or other history
preservation-related disciplines, such as cultural geography or cultural anthropology, provided,
however, that at least one member shall be an architect holding Montana or NCARB registration; (2) Two to four members from historic districts;

(3) One member from the Main Street commercial district, who "shall operate a business or own
property in the neighborhood described as Main Street";
(4) Four to six at-large representatives.
Residence within the City shall not be a prerequisite for professional members or at-large
representatives. This board is considered advisory, although it is generally responsible for
overseeing the operation of the Historic Preservation Office.
This board currently has six vacancies and one new applicant. New Applicant Bryce Ledbetter (at-large)

Please explain your relevant qualifications, interests and experiences.: Please consider my
application for a place on the Historic Preservation Advisory Board (BHPAB). I graduated from
Texas Christian University (TCU) with degrees in Communications and History. While at TCU I
took the opportunity to spend a semester abroad in London. I've always been drawn to British
culture and history and wanted to experience both first-hand. Exploring the ancient sites of the UK and Europe at the college age gave me a new appreciation for the preservation of historical
sites. It made me realize that many in American society are too quick to demolish structures of
historical significance. Progress and growth are essential elements to our way of life, but should
not come at the expense of "bulldozing" the past. I am currently head of local marketing and
corporate sales at Schnee's Boots and Shoes; right in the heart of historic downtown. Since my arrival in Bozeman, back in October of 2012, I have wanted to become involved with the city in
some way shape or form. Given my passion for history and love for this city, the BHPAB was an
obvious choice. Thank you for your consideration.
