Operationally, this is a challenging time of year for the Parks Division.
We are down to 5 seasonal employees and volume of trash, dog waste,
etc….has increased, now that M.S.U. is back in session. As it cools
down, the grass is growing again, which has our two mowers
scrambling to keep the grass at an acceptable height.
Fall maintenance and projects include: aeration and fertilization of
athletic fields and core parks, the new restroom at Lindley is here and
set in place,
Park Improvement Grant (PIG) projects that are on-going are: the
water fountain at Beall is ready to be installed, infield renovations
happened at Kirk and N. Grand, trail extension at the Pond, and the
beach expansion and skate park projects are starting in the next week
or so.
User groups in the fall are: AYSO soccer at Bronken Park, YMCA flag
football at the Softball Complex and Midget football is at Christie
Fields. Of course, Farmer’s Market will continue into the second week
of October, due to the longer growing season we had this year. A new
addition is- cyclocross will be using the cemetery land west of
Highland, commonly referred to as Lindley, for a series of Wednesday
night races.
Doug, our Park foreman, is starting to compile some data for
justifying additional FTE’s. A couple of things jumped out at
me……………………… did you realize: we have close to 70 foot bridges
and bridges located within our park and trial system. There are 34
playgrounds within city limits with the Parks Division actively
maintaining 22 of them. 60+ miles of trails and there are close to 400
irrigation heads……… just at Bronken alone! I could go on, but the
data will be impressive
