September 2013
Our very busy (and fun) summer season came to a close at the end of August. 2,065 people participated in
our recreation programs from June-August, up 123 from last year. We were excited to offer many new program options which proved to be very popular! New program examples are listed
below.
New Adult programs: Stand Up Paddle Board (taught by MT Whitewater), Fly Fishing for Women, Parent’s Night Out, Sand Volleyball League, Pickin’ in the Park (community jam
session every Wednesday night in Bogert Park), Zumba in the Park, Single Parent Mingle
New Youth Programs: EXPLORE! Summer Day Camp, Skateboarding (with help from Gallatin Valley
Skate Park Association), Archery, Fly Fishing, Kayaking
The National Wildlife Federation in partnership with the National Parks and Recreation Association recently set a three year
goal to get 10 Million Kids Outdoors. The overall goal is to get kids outdoors, playing, learning and connecting to nature for 90 minutes or more per week than they are now. We signed
up to help with this initiative and committed to include outdoor time in each of our classes during the summer, regardless of the program theme. We were successful in meeting our goal
and will be compiling data to send to the National Parks and Recreation Association during the month of Sept.
We have launched new Active Aging Programs for people ages 55 and better
this fall. We have had limited class options for seniors to date, so this is very exciting for us. Classes include, pole walking for fitness (or stability and mobility), Pickleball,
Zumba, Curling and more! We have already received good feedback from participants and we are working on increasing marketing in an effort to spread the word and increase participation.
We also have a variety of new adult programs this fall and winter! Through a great partnership with the Ridge Athletic Clubs we are able to offer boot camps in Beall Park in September,
October and November! Avalanche Awareness, Curling, Ice Skating, and Juggling are a few other new classes.
New for youth: Afterschool programs! We kicked these off in September with
SNAG golf, next month will be Archery. We continue to offer preschool classes three times a week at Beall. These programs remain some of our more popular.
473 facility and park
reservations were on the books during June-August. All facility (Lindley Center, Beall and Story Mansion) and park reservations are now processed through the Parks and Recreation Department
office located in the Beall Park Recreation Center.
