HomeMy WebLinkAboutAccepting Grant funding from the Montana Board of Crime Control Commission Memorandum REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission FROM: Deputy Chief Rich McLane City Manager Chris Kukulski SUBJECT: MBCC Grant for Crime Scene Hardware, Software and related training. MEETING DATE: May 6, 2013 AGENDA ITEM TYPE: Consent RECOMMENDATION: Authorize the ratification of a grant acceptance signed by the City Manager accepting Grant funding in the amount of $10,000 from the Montana Board of Crime Control, Grant 10-G01-91358 for purchase of two Tough book computers, Edge-FX software and related training. BACKGROUND: In 2009, the Bozeman Police Department purchased software and related warranty support that allows trained police employees the ability to capture and recreate major crime scenes. This was, and continues to be, an extremely important tool for major crime or accident scene analysis and use in courtroom presentations. Fatality accidents, Aggravated Assaults and several Homicides are the type of dynamic events that require the ability to recreate a crime scene in a manner that shows a jury how evidence from an incident supports the findings of the police investigator. The software purchased allowed for three-dimensional display of these crime scenes and has already been an instrumental part of several major investigations. Since 2009, the software and supporting computers have lost their effectiveness, due to the rapid improvement in technology since that time. Additionally, the need for durable, portable Tough book computers was identified as the most effective means to complete these drawings. I recently completed a grant application with the Montana Board of Crime Control on a solicitation providing grant funds for technology related improvements. On April 10, 2013, MBCC announced the award had been granted to the City of Bozeman in the amount of $10,000 for the purchase of two Tough book computers, current EdgeFx diagramming software, related warranty/maintenance and training costs for five police officials. UNRESOLVED ISSUES: None ALTERNATIVES: None FISCAL EFFECTS: Acceptance of this grant, along with the equipment, software and training it provides, is a prudent, responsible way to improve police investigation in the area of crime 73 scene diagramming. This purchase should benefit police operations for a minimum of five years. There are no matching costs regarding acceptance of this grant.
