Aimee Brunckhorst, Chris Kukulksi, Betsy Webb and Dan Clark met 1-29-13 to strategize about upcoming ethics training for employees
and board members. The next strategy session will occur on Thursday, April 4th at 2 p.m. in the Jefferson room at city hall.
Curriculum Group: Several questions occurred to me after
the meeting that need followed up on.
Contract between Local Government Center and City. Will we use the same format as last year? Price of LGC support?
See highlights below.
Summary
Boards:
Aime
e presented an advisory board training curriculum outline for review and discussion. Discussion led to the following decisions/edits.
Due to 1 hour time constraints – shorten learning
objectives and outline
15 minutes for introductions, etc.
Place Scenario towards the beginning of the training (15 min.)
Cover Content 1 for 15 minutes - Content based upon what board
members have questions about or based on handling conflicts of interest.
Cover Content 2 for 15 minutes - Content based upon what board members have questions about or based on meeting
procedure to comply with open meeting laws, right to know, etc.
Use of clicker technology for pre-testing, etc.
Next Steps:
Aimee to revise curriculum outline based on discussion and
email out to curriculum group.
Dan Clark will use current slides from the LGC to build a short presentation and a few pre-test clicker questions. Dan and Betsy to provide conflict of
interest scenarios related to board members. One related to a regulatory board and one related to advisory board? - Once the LGC has this drafted – email to staff for review.
Once
draft is complete, Aimee will email to staff liaisons regarding the plan to train them first so they can help Aimee with the board trainings. Once that is
complete, email to all the boards to inform them of the plan and begin the scheduling process.
Employees
Chris reported that the directors were receptive to the training ideas from
the last strategy session. He still needs to speak with Anna about logistical resources for the employee training.
Betsy reported that she looked back at the employee comments from
her qualitative study and the curriculum strategy ideas seem to match up with much of what the employees said they needed.
Discussion occurred regarding the Leadership ‘track’. Betsy
suggested having participants brainstorm how people can lead in their everyday lives/jobs and spoke regarding focusing curriculum on taking initiative, modeling behavior you want to
see and talking about using courage in direct communication.
Discussion occurred regarding the Confidentiality ‘track’ for supervisors. Betsy asked about approaching the supervisors
about what they had questions about and Chris said he felt it best to just create the curriculum instead of ‘shooting in the dark’.
Aimee mentioned Leadership speaker at MSU in February
may help inform the leadership training. Aimee and Greg planning on attending. Chris possibly?
Next steps:
Local Government Center will draft curriculum slides (and clicker questions?)
for the three tracks and email to the curriculum group prior to the meeting in April. The April meeting will be used to make any final touches to the curriculum and move forward with
setting training dates.
Chris will talk to Anna about logistical resources from the HR department for the employee trainings.
Logistical resources needed include:
List of all employees
that are supervisors
List of all remaining employees by department
Scheduling the trainings
Training room set up
Introducing the trainer
Notification to employees and reminders
Tracking
attendance / signing for yearly oath
