BACKGROUND: Six terms on the Bicycle Advisory Board expired December 31, 2012 and there is one ongoing vacancy for a non-voting High School liaison. Five of the members with expiring terms have re-applied and there are three other applicants. None of the applicants qualify for the High School student vacancy. The Bozeman Area Bicycle Advisory Board (BABAB) was created by the City Commission in September 1990 (Resolution No. 2817). Its purpose is to recommend safe bicycle practices throughout Bozeman in regard to enhanced bicycle circulation and design, community-wide bicycle education and safety programs, and other matters relating to bicycling in the Bozeman area. As amended by Ordinance 1594, Chapter 2.98 in April 2003, the board shall consist of up to nine members who will serve two year staggered terms. Each member may be reappointed without any limitation on the number of reappointments. Persons must be of legal age. A majority of the board shall be residents of the city. Non-resident members of the board shall have some interest in the city by virtue of working in the city, owning property in the city, or entering the city frequently for any lawful purpose. In addition, the members should be knowledgeable of bicycling and/or traffic safety in the Bozeman area. This board has six expiring terms and one vacancy for a High school student, five re-applying board members and three applicants. I've commuted by bike both in Bozeman and in Minneapolis for the past several years and get around town primarily by bicycle. I'm interested in encouraging more Bozemanites to ride their bikes around town, especially for those shorter trips. I think the bicycle is a fantastic way to experience Bozeman and envision a future of healthier residents, less pollution, lower dependence on fossil fuels, and more economical transportation. Also, I believe that a bicycle friendly city is great for small businesses, especially in a town like Bozeman with our terrific Main St. corridor.
