COill1ISSION RESOLUTION NO. 2050
WHEREAS, the City of Bozeman,
as declared in Resolution No. 1996, dated August 16,
1978,
opposed any discontinuance of Amtrak rail service in Montana,
on either the northern or south-
route; and
I WHEREAS, said resolution listed many valid reasons for opposing any discontinuance
of
such rail service, among many more reasons presented during the public hearing held on this
matter in Butte, Montana; and
WHEREAS, it now appears that a decision may have been reached which would discontinue
the southern route through'Montana, which would directly affect the City of Bozeman and cities
similarly served by the southern route; and
WHEREAS, the City of Bozeman is extremely disappointed and dismayed that such a
decision
may have been reached, and would surely question the basis which the decision relied upon;
and
WHEREAS, it is furthermore regrettable that such a decision would not pit those
cities
in the southern tier against those along the northern border-all within Montana- in attempt-
ing to reverse such a decision which affects much of the economic life blood of those cities
involved;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that,
the City Commission of the City of Bozeman does
herewith disagree, object to and deplore the decision to discontinue Amtrak rail
service
along the southern route, and would reiterate at least the following two reasons for such
reaction: (1) The economic potential along the southern
route affects at least 300,000
people-easily a third of the state's population,
and (2)
The institution of higher learn-
ing alone in cities along the southern route - Miles City,
Billings, Bozeman,
Butte, and
I Missoula - account for a student body in excess of 30,000,
in addition to the faculty, staff
and support personnel employed at these state schools;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that,
the City Commission urges that-any decision adversely
involving the southern route be received prior to adoption, and that preferable no discon-
tinuance of Amtrak rail service for Montana be allowed.
ADOPTED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BOZEMAN, MONTANA, at a regular session of said
Commission held on the 7th day of March, 1979.
