HomeMy WebLinkAboutmayoral proclamation - Red Ribbon week Commission Memorandum REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission FROM: Aimee Brunckhorst, Deputy City Clerk Stacy Ulmen CMC, City Clerk SUBJECT: Mayoral Proclamation for Red Ribbon Week – Oct. 22 – 26th MEETING DATE: October 22, 2012 MEETING TYPE: Consent RECOMMENDATION: Approve the attached Mayoral Proclamation declaring October 22nd through 26th Red Ribbon Week to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and encourage prevention, early intervention, and treatment services. BACKGROUND: Ken Spencer, prevention specialist at the Adolescent Resource Center of Alcohol and Drug Services of Gallatin County contacted the clerk’s office regarding the attached proclamation as one way to show that people in the community support drug prevention. Events will be held in schools across the city of Bozeman, at all grade levels. This year’s theme is “The Best Me Is Drug Free.” Mayor Becker would like the Commission to add their support for this Mayoral Proclamation. ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Commission. Attachment: Proclamation 71 MAYORAL PROCLAMATION RRREEEDDD RRRIIIBBBBBBOOONNN WWWEEEEEEKKK ~~~ OOOCCCTTT... 222222nnnddd tttooo 222666 “““TTThhheee BBBeeesssttt MMMeee iiisss DDDrrruuuggg FFFrrreeeeee...””” ttthhh ********************************************** WHEREAS, the Red Ribbon Celebration brings millions of people, across the US together to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and encourage prevention, early intervention, and treatment services; and WHEREAS, Red Ribbon Week is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States and the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation, reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October; and WHEREAS, By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, young people pledge to live a drug-free life; and WHEREAS, We encourage community members to wear and display red ribbons and participate in drug-free activities throughout the week as studies show support of people in the community is the most effective tool to reduce use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; and WHEREAS, Beyond wearing a red ribbon, we encourage parents and adults to use this occasion to talk with children about drugs, alcohol and tobacco as short, frequent discussions can have a real impact on a child’s decisions about alcohol, drugs and tobacco, and children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42 percent less likely to use drugs than those who don't, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations; and WHEREAS, We also encourage all community members to attend the Red Ribbon Event on Thursday, October 25, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Bozeman City Hall when Lieutenant Jake Wagner from the Missouri River Drug Task Force will discuss drug trends in our community.
