HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-22-12 Tree Advisory Board Minutes �' '•'�'" TREE ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES �- AUGUST 22, 2012 12:00 PM CITY SHOPS TRAINING ROOM BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Bill Hoch, Chairperson Jennifer Weiss, Vice Chair Mary Keck Lessa Racow Scott Makoutz Absent: Cyndy Andrus, Commission Liaison CITY STAFF PRESENT: Mitch Overton, Director of Parks & Recreation Ryon Stover, City Forester Michelle Dipzinski, Board Secretary GUESTS PRESENT: None Item # 1— Call meeting to order: • Chairperson Hoch called the meeting to order at 12:00p.m. Item #2 — Review meeting agenda: • No changes were requested Item #3 —Approve July 11, 2012 meeting minutes—Action Item: • No public comment was presented • No changes were requested Motion: Boardmember Keck motioned to approve the July 11, 2012 minutes as presented. Boardmember Racow seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Item #4— Public Comment: • No public comment was presented Item #5 — New Business: A) Welcome new board member Scott Makoutz: • Boardmember Makoutz introduced himself 0 owns Gallatin Tree Care o has been in Bozeman since 1999 • All others in attendance introduced themselves B) Fall meeting time and dates: • Fall schedules require that meetings be rescheduled, the changes will be decided monthly • September's meeting will be held Friday September 28t" at 11am to noon. o the City Clerk's office will be notified and a notice will be made C) Recognition of Shelly Engler's years of service: • a discussion ensued regarding the many years that Shelly Engler served on the Tree board o Boardmember Keck will write something up about her service o possibly planting a tree on S. 8t" in her honor was discussed D) Forestry Department moved to Parks and Recreation Department: • the move was discussed • the new Director of Parks and Recreation Mitch Overton was introduced Item 46 —Old Business: A) Board renewals: • the next terms to expire are Boardmembers Keck, Weiss and Racow on June 30, 2013 B) Historic Preservation Walk: • coordinating with the Historic Preservation Board for next year's walk was discussed C) MSU Tree Campus USA update: • A.J. Hook and Rodney Walters are still working on getting the designation o Chairperson Hoch and Boardmember Keck will attend the next meeting that is called 7 — FYI: a) 8`h Ave rebuild: b) Rouse Ave rebuild, 2014 start: c) Bozeman Creek Enhancement Project: • the project is moving forward, there is a plan in place • they have been discussing getting bigger trees to grow on Main Street, options include: i. suspended sidewalks ii, rubber sidewalks iii. using pavers instead of cement sidewalks d) Voucher Program: e) Cost Share Program: f) Montana Big Tree Program: g) Other board information/activities: Park & Recreation Board: y- Beautification Board: Subdivision Review Committee: Cemetery Board, Boardmember Keck liaison: h) 2020 Plan &Transportation Plan: i) Tree pest alert process, information to arborists& maintenance company: • 90% of the Spruce trees have huge cone crops on the top and the tops are spindly, it is unknown why they are stressed Item #8 —Other: • Elisa Boyd will be doing an independent study of the Tree Guide • DNRC is having a Tree Workshop in Sheridan Wyoming October 10 & 11 • Director Overton and Foreman Stover discussed holding training and special events in Bozeman • The Montana Nursery & Landscape Association Fall Tour is scheduled for Friday, September 7 o information can be found at www.plantingmontana.com Item #9 —Schedule next meeting—To be determined: • the next meeting is scheduled for September 28`" at 11am at the City Shop Complex Training Room at 814 N, Bozeman Avenue Motion: Boardmember Keck motioned to adjourn the meeting at 12:40 pm. Boardmember Racow seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
