Minutes of Meeting January 10, 2012
Chamber of Commerce Building, Bozeman Montana
Present: Daryl Schliem (Executive Director) Jim Robbins (Sales
Development)
Board Members: Andrew Ash, Lynn Bendz (sec), Sandra Hodge, Tim Kuhlman (president), Larry Lambert, Carl Solvie, Tom Stenzel (treasurer)
Advisory Board Members: Dan Rust
Public:
Matt Sease & Darin Barbe (Bozeman Super 8), Petra Gunther (Best Western Grantree), Wanda Skinner (Days Inn), Mckenzie Treinen (Residence Inn), Tom Mazurek (Holiday Inn), Andy Buttler
(Wingate)
Tim Kuhlman opened the meeting at 12:20, asking for any disclosures. Jim Robbins had spoken to some about the executive session which preceded the general meeting.
He
then asked for any public comment and there was none.
The minutes of the last meeting were approved after the incorrect spelling of MHLA was corrected to MLHA (Montana Lodging and
Hotel Association).
The financial report was given by Daryl Schliem. After receiving $212,650 in tax collections, and paying off our note at First Security Bank, and then paying for
some other things, we have $95,206 left.
Jim Robbins gave a report on Bozeman bed tax collections, comparing the 2010 to 2011. The 1st quarter of 2011 was up 18% over 2010, 2nd quarter
up 10%, and the 3rd quarter was even. The 4th quarter will not be available until our next meeting.
Dan Rust gave the tournament report and thanked all volunteers for their help at
the volleyball matches. He said we have a track meet this Memorial Day weekend for all A & B schools, so that is very helpful. This track meet repeats in Bozeman for 2013 too. Dan
said we won these tournaments directly because of our zero bidding.
Jim gave the marketing report, and said the Bridger Bowl “Domestic Bliss” campaign has been delayed for at least a
couple weeks due to the weak snow conditions. He discussed the various levels of success of the different marketing efforts that we have tried this year. Adds in Wild Blue Yonder were
mediocre, but the National Geographic add resulted in over 1000 inquiries for info about Bozeman and Montana. If we partner with the CVB for retaining an add agency and combine our
marketing dollars, we can get a bigger bang for the buck and free Jim up for more selling.
Jim attended the National Tour Association annual event and he said it was well worth the
investment.
He said that we had decided not to bid for the Ecotourism Conference in Sept of 2013, as they want $40,000 to come to Bozeman, and Bozeman meeting space is too limited.
A new job description for Jim Robbins was discussed. Instead of devoting 100% of his time to the TBID, he will be the vice president of the the realigned TBID/CVB/BACC tourism division.
Much discussion about duties, and questions regarding if this will dilute his selling efforts for the TBID. The short answer is “No-it will not”. Motion to approve the change made
by Tom Stenzel, seconded by Andrew Ash, all voice approved.
Larry Lambert said that it would behoove us to get detailed reports back from our funded events to see if the bed nights
generated are worth the money spent. Good idea, and Jim will follow up to see its done.
Motion to adjourn at 1:40pm as there was no more business. Next meeting we will be discussing
whether to help fund a USSSA Sanctioned Baseball Tournament scheduled for June 28 to June 30, 2012.
