HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-16-12 Tree Advisory Board Minutes r7 p TREE ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES MAY 15, 2012 c a 88 .•� � ''` 12:00 PM IN CO.i °,.'; CITY SHOPS TRAINING ROOM BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Jennifer Weiss, Vice-Chair Shelly Engler Mary Keck Cyndy Andrus, Commission Liaison Absent; Bill Hoch, Chairperson Lessa Racow CITY STAFF PRESENT: Ryon Stover, City Forester Michelle Dipzinski, Board Secretary GUESTS PRESENT: Item # 1 — Call meeting;to order: • Vice-Chair Weiss called the meeting to order at 12:01p.m. Item #2 — Review meeting agenda: • No changes were requested • add MSU Tree Campus USA update to the next meeting agenda Item #3 —Approve April 18, 2012 meeting minutes —Action Item: • No public comment was presented • No changes were requested Motion: Boardmember Keck motioned to approve the April 18, 2012 as presented. Boardmember Engler seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Item 44— Public Comment: • No public comment was presented Item #5 — New Business: A) Historic Preservation Walk: • Boardmember Engler and Keck will both be at the preliminary walk as well as the official walk • the Silver Maple at the corner of Mendenhall and Broadway is about 125 years o€d B) Board Renewals: • both Chairperson Hoch and Boardmember Engler terms expire on June 30th • Boardmember Engler is unsure at this time if she will apply for another term C) Date changes for meetings:July 11" and August 22": • it was decided by the board members present to cancel the June meeting D) Update on 8 I Ave. rebuild: • printouts from the city website on the 81h Ave. Rebuild Project were handed out at the meeting • the majority of the boulevard trees are Green Ash and they handle root disturbances fairly well • the median will be rebuild, the trees that could be moved were put in parks and the cemetery, new trees will be planted next year, curb and cutter will be added o it was suggested that the tree planting be an Arbor Day Event Item #6 —Old Business: A) Voucher Program 2012_: • the Voucher Program for FY13 is finished, all 200 vouchers have been sent out • Arborist Amy Hansen runs the program; she does not remove any trees until contact with the homeowner has been made. A packet of what she sends with the voucher was handed out • planting locations are verified to ensure all trees were planted on the boulevard B) Cost Share Program 2012: • there are about 25 trees still available to the public of the 125 purchased; species still available are Oak, Honeylocust and Elm • crews have started planting, they plant five or six trees per day • this year's trees came from Cashman's and Reese Creek C) Montana Big Tree Program: • there has been no activity on this Item #7 — FYI: Only bulleted items were discussed. a) Rouse Ave rebuild, 2014 start b) Bozeman Creek Enhancement Project: c) Gallatin Valley water issue- d) Other board information/activities: Park& Recreation Board, Boardmember Engler liaison: • Esergy is working on landscaping and planting in the park, Park Superintendent Thom White is working with them Beautification Board: Y Subdivision Review Committee: r Cemetery Board, Boardmember Keck liaison: e) 2020 Plan &Transportation Plan: f) Tree board history: g) Tree pest alert process, information to arborists & maintenance company • have been treating for Elm Scale in Cooper Park Item #8 —Other: • the Arbor Day planting of four Maple trees was completed on May 15`h o magnets were handed out to the children o crews hit an irrigation line on the last hole, repairs were made at that time o there was a poem read at the planting • a grant has been received to measure the benefits of the urban forest for carbon capturing, heating and cooling and a new storm water program 0 230 random plots, which are 27 feet in diameter, have been picked by the GIS Department o will be using the Montana Cadastral program online to get the name and address of the property owners who will be sent a letter explaining the program and a stamped return postcard either allowing or denying access to the property o crews will measure the trees, their condition and the relation to buildings o hoping for 200 replies allowing access, if that doesn't happen more locations will be randomly picked • discussed the Emerald Ash Borer o all Ash Trees would be affected o there are chemical applications and wasps have been used to kill the larvae o the bug moves with firewood and packing material, DNRC has put out traps locally to see if any are in the area but none were found • the Asian Longhorn Beetle has been found in Massachusetts, it started in Chicago, the beetle came over in packing material and will attack any tree Item 49 —Schedule next meeting—June 20,.2012: • the June meeting has been cancelled Motion: Boardmember Engler motioned to adjourn the meeting at 12:48 pm. Boardmember Keck seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
