Dear Mr. Free:
On 6/26/12, this Department received notification of a domestic wastewater discharge into
Bozeman Creek. Field notes document the source of the flow originating from your property at
3173 Sourdough Rd.
On 6/27/12, Gallatin City-County Health Department (GCCHD) performed a site visit to confirm
the wastewater concern. It was evident that washing machine discharge has been flowing from a
2-inch outlet line on your property into the creek.
Gallatin City-County Health Code Chapter 3 Regulations for Wastewater Treatment Systems,
Section 1.0 B) states:
Safe treatment and disposal of all wastewater is necessary to protect public health and the
environment and to prevent disease. Therefore, wastewater must be treated and disposed of so
that it will not 2) Pollute or contaminate any surface or groundwater.
In addition, the Administrative Rules of Montana 17.36.913 state:
(1) No person may construct, alter, extend or utilize a wastewater treatment or disposal
system that may: (e): pollute or contaminate state waters, in violation of 75-5-605, MCA.
GCCHD requires:
1. Immediate cessation of washing machine wastewater into Bozeman Creek.
2. Submit a written plan of correction no later than July 06, 2012 that addresses
proper disposal and treatment of washing machine discharge on your property.
It was visually confirmed that the problem is an improper connection of laundry wastewater into
a sump pump below your dwelling. The on-site septic tank and leachfield appear to be operating
satisfactorily.
Please contact this Department with any questions or concerns that you may have.
Sincerely,
Wayne “Wano” Urbonas, Environmental Health Specialist
