E. Special Presentations
a. Jeff Moore - web research findings from Boulder, CO.
i. Moore described the Boulder Energy Future campaign with the tagline,
"You have the power to decide." The logo is a picture of an outlet that is
smiling. This is non-threatening and avoids an ominous message. Climate
action was explicitly described.
ii. Moore would have liked to see a more interactive approach to the
website, using the carbon calculator and the Energy Hog program for kids
as a good entry point. He suggested that we consider our own URL for
the website.
b. Nick Bentley—web research findings from Salem, OR.
i. Bentley observed that there was no mention of climate change on the
Salem website. They use the tagline "Take Charge". There are three big
initiatives underway: A community energy strategy, a business & research
park for renewable energy, and the Sustainable Campus Initiative.
ii. Bentley noted that features such as the calendar draw in users. There was
a notable lack of social networking or a blog on the page, which gives the
page the appearance of being a static site. There was a page of tips and
tools that contained national and local resources.
iii. Suggested the City consider using Work Press-CMS, such as the Library
Foundation's page. We should make sure to use the right keywords in the
Search Engine Optimization, so people can find the site.
c. Kathy Powell- I'm Cool campaign toolkit
i. The cities of Seattle, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, and Boston created the
Climate Action Campaign Toolkit to provide cities with the community
engagement resources they need to inspire their residents and businesses
to take action to reduce climate pollution.
ii. In creating a web-based toolkit of high quality, adaptable resources for
engagement programs, the project is intended to lower the start-up costs
that currently hold many cities back from engaging their residents and
businesses on the issue of climate change. Available to all cities.
iii. There was group discussion about the many existing tools and resources
available and how we need to take advantage of these. There was also
discussion of balancing this with the local desire for ideas and solutions,
along with the general anxiety about "outside" entities. Powell
volunteered to begin researching some of the other climate change
resources available on the internet.
d. Core Values & Positioning Statement Exercise
i. A sub-committee was established to further refine the core values and
positioning statement. This group would return with a finished product to
vote on at the next meeting.
ii. Paula Beswick, Jeffrey Moore, Jay Sinnott, Benjamin Bennett, and Natalie
Meyer volunteered for this sub-committee.
iii. The sub-committee planned their meeting for Feb. 17 at 2:OOpm at the
Library.
e. City Research Assignments
i. All members present received a city research assignment. Members were
tasked with evaluating the websites as a window into the community. We
are interested in website accessibility and ease of navigation, the city's
branding, logo, and positioning statements, and notable outreach
programs.
ii. Each presenter will have 5-7 minutes to share their findings with the
group.
f. Meeting Schedule
i. Meyer asked whether the group wanted to meet on February 29th. This
would be the third meeting of the month. If the group meets on the 29th
then we would no longer be on the 1St and 3rd Wednesday schedule for
meetings. This is problematic because there would be conference room
scheduling conflicts if we change the meeting sequence.
ii. The group suggested that we meet on both February 29th and March 7th
in order to catch up on the timeline and stay on the schedule of meeting
the 1St & 3 rd Wednesday of the month. The meeting on the 29th would
primarily be used for the city research assignments. The members present
approved this idea.
g. Mission Statement-delayed until March 7th
h. Logo & Branding Process- delayed until March 7th
F. Meeting adjourned at 10:30am.
