E. Special Presentations
a. Jay Sinnott presented information on Park City, UT website
Web link is parkcitygreen.org. It was established by the City and the Park City Foundation.
They appear to be 2 to 3 years ahead of Bozeman in the area of sustainability and it's an
impressive website with tools for individuals, carbon calculators, water calculator, waste
calculator, kid's calculator. There is a Save our Snow campaign and a Facebook page. With
the calculators, you can set your own baseline and it lists the things you can do to reduce
your impacts. There are tips on a low carbon diet, things you can do to save at home. There
are big visual icons throughout and a Kid's Zone. Page can be found through city
sustainability page; primarily non-profit funded.
b. Kristin Walser presented information on Ann Arbor, MI website
Ann Arbor has 117,000 people. They first developed their CAP in 2003, but they are just now
specifically working on it. They are known for being green with recognitions, such as the
Solar American Cities award. Website has large icons presented various programs with
catchy names, such as Caulk is Cheap, Air Seal the Deal, Pass on the Gas, and PACE yourself.
One program is referred to as A2 Energy that has pages with tips for landlords, renters,
commercial owners, and homeowners. Prior Design did the web design. The content is free
to be used, but not the graphic design. They had a non-profit agency develop the content.
"Lighten Up" is listed as one of the tag lines. There is a program called E-peeps,which is the
primary interactive element on the page. It lists green contractors & auditors.Amherst,
Mass had a relatively bad site. Kristin also explored Efficiency 2.0's website, which is a
company that can calculate what you have; personalized recommendations, social context
stuff to display energy savings; approach. First Fuels is another company that does this work
for industry;
i. Jeff Moore- USB fund with $50M, a similar company made a presentation for
State of Montana and NWE, but not sure if NWE would be willing to provide the
utility date.
c. Rob Pudner presented information on the Austin,TX website
Cool Austin.org is the re-direct page and is easy to remember. In 2007 Austin started their
climate protection program, which spearheads all the initiatives. There is lots of marketing,
no actual plan, but comprehensive efforts. The program is integrated into everything, but
there is no specific department managing the program. They have a bunch of categories
listed and the links bring you into the department programs, such as urban Austin,Austin
Climate Protection Program, Cool Austin. Cool Planet, and making Austin Livable. There are
two versions of the carbon calculator: simple and expanded. There is a login page under
"My community", which might have social interaction page.
One interesting program is that a local business can apply to be a green business, if granted,
get use of city sustainability logo, is advertised on the website, and recognized through
awards. Recognizing what people are doing through awards is a positive way to promote
sustainability. There is a speaker's bureau forum. They also have a Green Gems map that
recognizes the city's most sustainable sites.
i. Jeff Moore mentioned that the Governor's Energy Intern program could be used to
hire someone to manage the website. Nick Bentley again mentioned that the site
could be more easily managed if we use Word Press. Benjamin Bennett noted that it
might be difficult to host something like a carbon calculator on Word Press.
d. Cyndy Andrus presented information on the Eugene, OR website
Eugene, OR has plain on website with no visuals or interactions to speak of. She could not
readily find a complete sustainability website, but she did find a report. Without seeing
anything, one just leaves the site. Cyndy instead shared a conservation video from National
geographic's Jonathan Churlo (sp?) related to the choices we make as a society.
i. Could show local images of Bozeman in same way- Hyalite versus developed
areas with magpies and trash.
e. Paula Beswick presented information on Chicago, IL website
Chicago has changed significantly since Mayor Daly. The website is easy to find and
there is so much its overwhelming. They have the Chicago Climate Action Plan. The site
lists multiple reports, lots of PDFs and there is no visible tagline. However, they have 5
strategies that are repeated throughout the site: Energy Efficient Buildigns, Clean &
Renewable Energy Sources, Improved Transportation Options, Reduced Waste &
Industrial Pollution, and Adaptation.
Since Chicago is so much bigger than Bozeman, she checked into Hanover, NH as a city
that is more comparable to Bozeman. There are 11,000 people and it was named the 6th
best place to live in US. There is access to skiing & recreation. There was nothing on the
Hanover webpage; but found she found information on Hanover.org. There are large
picture icons representing various programs, such as Kiosks around town, events,
community yard sales, take action, school district, faith communities, businesses, self
study; power up and power down. They have a slogan related to "Global vision, regional
connections". Some of the links go to outside resources such Choose Reality. There are
also small discussion groups and events.
f. Jeff Moore noted that we were running out of time, but recommended that everyone
check Clean Energy Durham, NC as another good example.
g. Kathy Powell reported on the Keep Winter Cool campaign at Big Sky and Bridger Bowl.
Both resorts have website and good signage on the slopes. The full title is "Keep Winter
Cool-Sustainable Slopes. NRDC and a few other agencies helped develop the program. If
we want to learn more, Doug Wales at Bridge Bowl would be a good resource. Park City
joined the program because it is projected that they will not have snow there by the end
of the Century.
F. Positioning Statement and Core Values
Benjamin Bennett presented the subcommittee's work on the title, positioning statement,
and core values. The group was looking for words that presented us and would be easy to
find on web with keywords. The title: Bozeman Climate Partners. This opens the door to
businesses and homeowners to help them do what they need to do.
BozemanClimatePartners.com would be easy to remember and own.
Paula Beswick also noted that the word "Climate" is also indicative of our economic viability,
the "climate" of Bozeman for Zoot and Sitka matters because it is the reason we all want to
be here.
Positioning Statement:
"Building Relationships. Living Smart."
Enforcing the relationships aspect; living smart, doing things more intelligently—not
bleeding edge of curve; but changing priorities.
Some discussed a third element, such as "Being Healthy". Other alternatives, such as:
"Living Smart.Taking Action" was explored, but group collectively decided to leave the
statement as presented.
Core Values:
Create
We generate opportunities for open dialogue and participation.
Connect
We engage with local groups or individuals to empower their efforts, no matter how big or
small.
Inspire
We encourage positive environmental stewardship.
Act
We take action to protect environmental assets that won't wait for convenience.
Kristin Walser suggested that Act be revised to say"Take action now to protect our
environmental assets. Others felt we needed to spend more time on the sentence
supporting"Inspire" .
At 10:25, Paula Beswick and Nick Bentley made a motion to vote on the name and
positioning statement only. All members present voted in favor of:
Bozeman Climate Partners
Building Relationships. Living Smart.
The group agreed to further revise the Core Values and vote on these at the next meeting.
G. FYI/Discussion:
Paula Beswick announced that Scott Christenson with the Greater Yellowstone Coalition
would come speak to the group during the meeting on March 21St
Natalie Meyer asked working group members to read about the "I'm Cool" program that
Kathy Powell described during the last meeting.
Nick Bentley said that he would create a new document on the Facebook group page for
everyone to post their ideas related to developing the logo and brand. Please add your ideas
before the next meeting on March 7tn
H. Adjournment
Meeting adjourned at 10:37 am.
