Definitions: Core values are the overarching values of the group. Position statements serve as the
anchor with the audience. Mission statements are the more verbose extended statement to the
audience.
The group discussed the target audience. Several suggested the"fence sitting"middle is the target.
Pudner also suggested that local businesses are the target because their influence will trickle down to
households. Beswick countered that we can't reach out to businesses only because businesses are
already strained in this economy. We have to make inroads with every major segment of the
population. Beswick and Sinnott noted that we need to provide factual, reliable factsheets for residents
on issues relevant to"In my home...", "In my business..."
A discussion about the group's goals raised questions about whether the City is aiming to be a thought
leaders on climate change, a clearinghouse of all local environmental activities, or are we helping
people to act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Bennett asked the group to contemplate touch points for communication in which people can be made
aware of their behavior. Example: When wishing to influence driving behavior, reach out to driver's
education teachers.
The group discussed teachers and children as influencers, as well as unexpected or unlikely role models
being especially effective.
Several position statements were discussed during the meeting:
"Building a Better Bozeman"(Baker)
"We've Got the Power"(Walser)
"Keep Bozeman Cool"(?)
b. Next steps and assigned tasks
Bentley is going to set up a Facebook group for the Communications Working Group. This will allow us
to communicate between meetings and exchange ideas.

statements by Tuesday,January 9th. Members can send their lists to Natalie or post on the Facebook
page and Natalie will compile this list for Ben.
