TREE ADVISORY 'BOARD MINUTES

Item # 1—Call meeting to order:
• Chairperson Keck called the meeting to order at 12:00p.m.
Item #2— Review meeting agenda:
• None.
Item #3—Approve August 17, 2011 meeting minutes—Action Item:
• No public comment was presented
• No changes were requested.
Motion: Boardmember Engler motioned to approve the August 17,2011 as presented.
Boardmember Weiss seconded the motion.
The motion passed unanimously.
Item #4—Open Public Comment:
• No public comment was given
Item #5 --New Business:
A) Bozeman Creek project update:
• Superintendent Van Delinder provided an email update on the Bozeman Creek Enhancement
Project that he received from Gary Weiner
• The next meeting date is set for November 8`h at 7 to 9pm at the Library to discuss the Bogert
Park area of the creek
• There will be a meeting in January to discuss making changes to the parking lot behind the
Eagles Club and how the creek heading north would change
• The Bozeman Creek Cleanup Day covered the area from City Hall to Bogert Park; they picked up
a ton of metal that went to recycling and also a truckload of garbage
• The Street Dept. also cleaned the creek; they hauled off five truckloads of debris which also
included brush
B) Sourdough Canyon trailhead work:
• There isn't much known about this project; the City does have land up there but it isn't going to
be affected
• The land was donated to the Gallatin Valley Land Trust
• Known changes will be:
• The parking lot will be moved away from the creek
• Trees will be planted
• A bathroom will be added
• A turn-around for emergency vehicles will be added
C) Cottonwood regeneration e-mail:
• This was added to the agenda as an interest only item
• Spread the word to people that may be in flood areas
Item #5—Old Business:
A) Tree Walk:
• Chairperson Keck talked to Boardmember Hoch; he has a student that will do a windshield
survey to find trees that could be included
• Jennifer Briten from the Historical Preservation Board is interested in contributing to the Tree
Walk
• There is a Heritage Tree Program that identifies specific historical landmark trees or a collection
of trees that are of value. It is a nomination process; an arborist and a committee go out and
look to certify accuracy then the owner is provided a manual on how to care for the trees
o DNRC and MUCFA are starting Heritage Tree Programs
• The windshield survey should be started, once areas are identified and an inventory list available
every year the Tree Walk could change
• Some trees to look at:
o The large Elm on Montana near Durston
o The large Maple in Cooper Park
• It is not necessary to just use trees planted in the public right of ways, private trees could be
used also with the home owner's permission
o Check with legal on how it works when a homeowner sells the property after permission
is given
• Chairperson Keck will contact Boardmember Hoch to invite the student to the next meeting
• Boardmember Racow will invite Jennifer Briten
• City Forester Stover will research more on Heritage Tree Programs

Item #8—Other:
• Meetings will move to the Training Room at the City Shop Complex at 814 N. Bozeman Ave.; the
meeting time will stay the same, noon to fpm
• The Live Christmas Tree PSA will be discussed as an action item at the next Board meeting;
information to include:
o a component of education on what to do to keep the trees alive
o do a PSA to dig the hole then and to keep the soil in the garage
• There could be a tree swap between people that want to have a live Christmas Tree and home
owners that would plant the tree
• The Street Dept. would take donated trees to plant around the sand shed on Rouse
• Chairperson Keck will contact KGLT to see if they have last year's recording on file
• Boardmember Engler will:
• See of the Rec and Park Board is interested in promoting live Christmas Trees
• Check with Jerry Cashman to see if he thinks this is a good idea
o Contact nurseries to see if they sell live Christmas Trees
• Boardmembers Engler and Racow will work to get the PSA changed and have it ready for
approval at the next meeting.
Item #9 —Schedule next meeting— November 8t" or 23rd, 2011 or Dec 14th, or January 18th, 2012:
• The next meeting date is set for November 23rd, 2011 from noon to fpm to be held in the Training
Room at the City Shop Complex, 814 N. Bozeman Ave.
• The other dates will be discussed at the next meeting
Motion: Boardmember Engler motioned to adjourn the meeting at 12:56 pm.
Boardmember Weiss seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Adjournment
Chairperson Keck adjourned the meeting at 12:56 p.m.
