NOVEMBER 2011
GVLT completed the following trail projects in October with assistance from the Parks & Rec Department:
• Sourdough Canyon Trailhead. After 4 years of planning, fundraising, and hard work, we are thrilled to have
completed our second phase of improvements at one of Bozeman's most popular trailheads in October.
The road construction, parking expansion, and stream work is complete, resulting in improved public
safety, better recreational access, and protected stream habitat...just in time for ski season!
• East Gallatin Recreation Area. We successfully rerouted and resurfaced trails impacted by flooding on both
the east and west sides of the East Gallatin River. We'll watch closely in the spring of 2012 to assess
whether any other adjustments need to be made.
• Regional Park Boulder&Westside Trail. With the installation of the fifth (and sixth, "junior mountaineer")
boulder at the Regional Park, the Bozeman Boulders Initiative has fulfilled its mission. GVLT worked with
volunteers in September to resurface part of the Westside Trail. Over the winter we will work to finalize the
easement with the Gallatin Valley Mall and City of Bozeman and plan to complete the Bozeman Pond
connector trail in the spring, making this trail system safer and more complete.
• Morningstar Trail. Contractors installed culverts and we successfully resurfaced most of the Morningstar
Trail system this month.
• Ellis & Highland Connector Trail. With funding from Collin's Coalition and assistance from the City of
Bozeman Street Department, we completed a short trail connector at the intersection of Ellis & Highland
(across from the Hospital Trails)to guide skiers to a safe crossing.
Ongoing & Emerging Trail Projects:
• Hospital Trails. With BSF, we were successful in getting permission to use the Hospital land east of
Highland Boulevard for winter use again this year. BSF, Gallatin County, and GVLT have been busy
mowing trails and preparing the site for winter use.
• Sourdough Trail Bridge. We received most of our permits to replace a bridge in disrepair on the Sourdough
Trail near Sundance Springs. We will continue to fundraise over the winter and expect to replace the bridge
next fall. We have approximately$4,000 and need another$4,000.
Thanks!
