Action
Appoint one new member to the Bozeman Historic Preservation
Advisory Board.
I move to appoint Jill Bowers as an at -large representative to the Bozeman Historic
Preservation Advisory Board.
BACKGROUND: This board currently has two vacancies for at -large representatives and one
new vacancy for a professional representative due to a recent resignation. The Historic Board
recommends the appointment of Ms. Bowers.
The Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board was created under Chapter 2.80 of the
Bozeman Municipal Code. This chapter is designed as a measure to establish a local historic
preservation program designed to promote the preservation of historic and prehistoric sites,
structures, objects, buildings, and historic districts by addressing historic preservation issues at
the local level and integrating them into local, state, and federal planning and decision - making
processes. The historic preservation program includes identification, evaluation, and protection
of historic resources within the city (Ordinance No. 1180, Section 2, 1985).
The Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board shall serve in an advisory capacity to the
City Commission, City- County Planning Board, Zoning Commission, and other staff members or
boards seeking advice on historic preservation issues (Ordinance No. 1454, Section 2, 1998;
Ordinance No. 1180, Section 3, 1985).
Members are appointed to staggered two -year terms. It is to be comprised of up to fifteen
members:

(1) Three or four professional members with professional expertise in the disciplines of history,
planning, archaeology, architecture, architecture history, historic archaeology, or other history
preservation- related disciplines, such as cultural geography or cultural anthropology, provided,
however, that at least one member shall be an architect holding Montana or NCARB registration;
(2) Two to four members from historic districts;
(3) One member from the Main Street commercial district, who "shall operate a business or own
property in the neighborhood described as Main Street ";
(4) Four to six at -large representatives.
Residence within the City shall not be a prerequisite for professional members or at -large
representatives. This board is considered advisory, although it is generally responsible for
overseeing the operation of the Historic Preservation Office.
This board currently has three vacancies and one new applicant.

I have a Master of Architecture degree and am passionate about preserving our historic, authentic places. I
designed and built a residence in NC in a neighborhood with historic overlay guidelines. I designed an addition
to a 100 yr old bungalow in the South Pasadena, CA historic district - requiring approvals from the Historic
Preservation Board and the Cultural Heritage Committee. Portfolio available for review if requested.
