SUBJECT: Bid award of Street Department dump truck with mounted plow and
sander with options.

RECOMMENDATION: Award bid to Rocky Mountain Truck Center for one new 2012
Freightliner M2 112 V with mounted plow and sander with options in the amount of $175,563.00
to be delivered to the City of Bozeman Shop Complex.
BACKGROUND: This truck with plow and sander is in the 2011 Capital Improvement Plan
and in the FY2011 approved budget. This will be an addition to our fleet, making all of our
snow route trucks 10 yard capacity. The one remaining snow route truck with a 4 yard capacity
will be retained for backup and sanding. A 10-yard capacity truck allows us to plow and sand
twice as long without having to refill in the middle of the route. Fuel efficiency and reliability
will increase with this truck. Options selected for inclusion in the bid award are an extended
engine warranty for seven years/250,000 miles, snow hauling body that will fit other
department’s trucks, upgrade to a stainless steel sander to extend the life of the sander and
storage legs so the sander can be off loaded anywhere for seasonal storage.
Nine bids were received. Three of the bids did not meet minimum specifications. The subject
bid from Rocky Mountain Truck Center is the lowest bid, including options.
FISCAL EFFECTS: The budgeted amount for this truck was $178,464.00. By awarding this
bid we will not be spending $2,902.00 that was budgeted. We will save an estimated 20% in fuel
costs and be more efficient in clearing the streets.
ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Commission.
