Minutes of Meeting November 18th, 2010
Chamber of Commerce Building, Bozeman Montana
Present: Daryl Schliem (Executive Director) Jim Robbins (Sales Development)
Board Members: Andrew Ash, Lynn Bendz (sec), Tim Kuhlman (president), Carl Solvie,
Tom Stenzel (treasurer)
Advisory Board Members: Dan Rust, Melanie Stocks
Public: Larry Lambert & Matt Sease (Bozeman Super 8), Vance Ruff & Kwinia Tatunka (MHSRA), Debra
Gunther (Best Western Grantree), Collin Letta & Marg Keefer (Bozeman Sculpure Park), Kevin Black
(Gene Cook Real Estate), Terra Corscadden ( LaQuinta)
Tim Kuhlman opened the meeting at noon, asking for any disclosures and there were none.
He then asked for any public comment and there was none.
Jim Robbins reported that based upon 11 months of hard data, the motel occupancy rate within our
district was 56% and our bed tax income will be $375,000. However, the city just billed all motels for
st
the 1 8 months of our tax year ending June 30, 2010, and our income will be $202,000 for that tax
st
period. That will be paid to us in two installments from the city--the 1 ½ this December and the next
½ in June 2011.
Jim Robbins reported that Chris Naumann had to resign as advisory board member. He also asked for a
motion to validate Dan Rust and Melanie Stocks as current advisory board members. Carl Solvie
proposed such a motion, seconded by Tom Stenzel, all voice approved.
We were then given a presentation from representatives of the Montana High School Rodeo Association.
rd
They are in their 3 year of a 3 year contract with the Gallatin County Fairgrounds, and are seeking
$12,000 from the TBID to help fund their organization, with the potential goal of making Bozeman the
st
permanent home of the rodeo. It is held during the 1 ½ of June. However, after much discussion and
questioning by the motel representatives, it was apparent that most of the 240 rodeo participants sleep in
campers at the fairground to be close to their horses and livestock. The actual hotel room nights
generated from this event are quite minimal, and it was felt, not worth $12,000 of TBID funding.
Last month we approved $4500 for Jim Robbins to attend a religious planning meeting in Tampa Bay.
However, Jim requested that we change the itinerary to a planning meeting in Las Vegas. It would only
cost about $2,500 and be much more effective for his initial meeting of conference organizers.
Everyone agreed to the change.
Daryl Schliem made a proposal subsidize the cost of the 2012 Montana Governor’s Conference by
allocating $28,815.25. MSU has agreed to waive many of its fees for the meeting, but do need money to
offset some fixed costs. There would be 700 to 900 overnight lodgings for the 2 day meeting in April 1
to 3 of 2012. Much discussion followed but the consensus was that the large amount of money
requested would not create enough room nights. No motion followed.
Melanie Stocks and Dan Rust talked about getting the 2011 Class A and Class C basketball tournaments.
They said that if enough volunteers cannot be found for these events, then the payroll for hiring ushers
and security people could be as high as $31,949.
Larry Lambert, Tom Stenzel, Tim Kuhlman and Jim Robbins will be on a committee to review proposals
for logo design and marketing materials for the TBID. They will ask 3 design firms to submit ideas.
Daryl Schliem submitted our budget. It showed income of $202,000 and expenses of $26,589.
Motion to adjourn at 2pm by Tom Stenzel, seconded by Lynn Bendz, all voice approved. Next meeting
will be on December 8, 2010.
