HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-15-10 Tree Advisory Board Minutesc©, 11*11:110 007T.1111 AIM klyj 113:113-721 a t MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE TREE ADVISORY BOARD SEPTEMBER 15, 2010 12:00 PM CITY HALL YELLOWSTONE ROOM Mary Keck, Chairperson Shelly Engler Rodney Walters Chris Mehl, Commission Liaison Absent: None CITY STAFF PRESENT: John Van Delinder, Street Superintendent Ryon Stover, City Forester Michelle Dipzinski, Tree Board Secretary GUESTS PRESENT: None Item # 1— Call meeting to order: a Chairperson Keck called the meeting to order at 12:00p.m. Chairperson Keck has to leave at 12:50 Item #2 — Review meeting agenda: 0 Add Tree Walk to the next agenda Item #3 — Approve August 11, 20210 meeting minutes — Action Item: • Page 2, Item 6A, first bullet — correct the spelling of Bill Halpins last name • Page 2, Item 6A, fourth bullet — correct the spelling of Ron Naffzigers last name • Page 2, Item 6B, second bullet — should read "and it is unknown if . — " Minutes of the Tree Advisory 130ardMeeting, September 15, 2010 Mot Boardmember Engler motioned to approve the August 11, 2010 minutes with the above mentioned corrections. Boandmemher Walter seconded the motion. Distribution and Verification of the newly printed Ethics Handbook to ALL citizen advisory board The motion passed unanimously. Item #4 — Open Public Comment: 0 No public comment was presented Item #5 — New Business: 0 Handbooks were passed out and the acknowledgment sheets were signed, 4J B) Dutch Elm Disease information: • There was one tree diagnosed bvK45U Pathology with the disease last year and b has been removed • Three other trees were tested by MSU Pathology, two were diagnosed as having an insect problem and one came back as positive for the disease. MSU came back later and said they reran the test and it came back asnegative • It is unknown how the disease hit one tree and not the others in the area, less than 10% of our urban forest is Elm trees. New cu|tivers are more resistant to the disease • once the disease inm tree there ismo way to save it. There are sprays that can be used aoa preventative measure. The fungus isin the root system snyf trees are close together itcan spread through the root system • MSU does inoculations in their trees in June, the city will offer our trees to Dr. Gary Strobel as test trees • Livingston does have the disease in their area. Item #6 — Old Business: A) » There are no new applicants w Kyle Bajakian is not sure he is interested, both Chairperson Keck & Forester Stover talked to him * Forester Stover left a message for Ron Naffziger but has not heard back from him � There was discussion in possibly having anM5U student on the board, Chairperson Keck m/Q contact both Bill Hoch, Adjunct Professor in charge of the Horticulture Club, and Tracy Dougher, Professor of Horticulture, to see if they have someone in their classes or clubs that may be interested Minutes ofthe Tree Advisory Board Meeting, September 15, 2010 0 Contact will also be made to the Garden clubs to see if they have anyone interested. Rouse Ave. Motion, Boardmember Engler motioned to adjourn the meeting at 12:45. Boardmember Walters seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
