Bozeman City Senior Advisory Board
November 17, 2010 Draft Minutes
Present: Norm Dreyer, Peggy Tromble, Fran Shellenberger
nd
1:15, 2 Floor, City Hall
Topics discussed:
Decided to postpone election of officers until the December meeting in order for more
members to be present.
Will present goals for 2011 at the December meeting. We agreed that a focus on access in
public places will be recommended as our first and top priority.
Discussed recruiting one additional member for the Board, perhaps someone from the Senior
Center.
Discussed the advisability of asking a representative of the Montana State University Alumni
Office or the Department of Health, Education and Human Development to attend meetings or
serve on the Board.
Discussed the importance of the Board’s complete understanding of the Montana population
demographics. We would like to be able to predict when the senior population will become the
largest segment of Montana’s population, especially in light of the fact that Montana’s senior
th
population ranks 4 in the country. We will need to use demographics figures in presenting
recommendations to the City Commission.
Discussed encouraging MSU to participate in events of the Montana Department of Aging,
perhaps serving as one of three sites for the Governor’s Conference on Aging. Discussed
encouraging MSU’s Department of HEHD to consider a future certificate or master’s degree in
gerontology, and making the university aware of the number of seniors moving to Bozeman and
the importance of the Baby Boomer generation in Bozeman and Montana (i.e., number of senior
housing options in the city and state, number of members of the Gallatin Valley Newcomers
Club [800] with 120 expected at their December luncheon).
Assignments:
Norm Dreyer will obtain the various population statistics.
Fran Shellenberger will seek appointments with officials at MSU.
Peggy Tromble will look into obtaining a new board member from the Senior Center.

The next meeting will be held on December 8, 2010 in the 2 floor conference room at City Hall, 121 N.
