Commission Memorandum
REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission
FROM: Ron Price, Chief of Police
Chris Kukulski, City Manager
SUBJECT: Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant
MEETING DATE: Monday, November 29, 2010
RECOMMENDATION: Adoption of the Bozeman Police Department / Gallatin County
Sheriff’s Office recommendation for the $40,204 JAG expenditure.
BACKGROUND: On August 26, 2010, the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) announced
the Bozeman Police Department and the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office were eligible for an
Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) in the amount of $40,204. A
requirement of this disparate grant is that the funds be used jointly between our two (2) law
enforcement agencies. JAG funded projects address crime by improving the effectiveness and
efficiency of criminal justice systems, processes and procedures.
UNRESOLVED ISSUES: None.
FISCAL EFFECTS: We intend to use these grant funds to purchase equipment which will be
used by the City and County Detectives, Patrol Officers and Deputies and members of the City /
County Special Response Team. This will provide valuable equipment to the agencies while at
the same time lessen the impact on our respective equipment budgets.
ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Commission.
CONTACT: Please feel free to email Deputy Chief Marty Kent at mkent@bozeman.net if you
have questions prior to the meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Ron Price, Chief of Police
Chris Kukulski, City Manager
