HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 3631 Support National Forest Management that protects & maintains roadless land COMMISSION RESOLUTION NO. 3631 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BOZEMAN, MONTANA, TO SUPPORT NATIONAL FOREST MANAGEMENT THAT PROTECTS AND MAINTAINS ROADLESS LANDS OF THE GALLATIN NATIONAL FOREST. WHEREAS, the Gallatin National Forest administers public lands that are the heritage of citizens of the United States, including those in the City of Bozeman; and WHEREAS, the Gallatin National Forest is revising its current Travel Management Plan with the goal of developing a Travel Management Plan that will guide travel management in the Gallatin National Forest for the next 15 years; and WHEREAS, roadless lands are responsible for many benefits to our community including clean drinking water, late season irrigation flows, ground water recharge; and WHEREAS, the proximity of roadless lands strengthens the economy of the City of Bozeman by attracting people who bring small businesses and investment and retirement income; and WHEREAS, roadless lands provide opportunities for hunting, fishing and wildlife viewing, activities that contribute significantly to the economy of Bozeman by attracting tourists and retaining long term residents; and WHEREAS, the City of Bozeman owns land located within the Gallatin Range from which drinking water for City residents is derived; and WHEREAS, both local population and motorized use are rapidly increasing, intensifying pressure on these lands; and WHEREAS, Congress designated the Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area to preserve its wilderness qualities until Congress decides the issue of Wilderness designation; and WHEREAS, road less lands offer protections against noxious weeds that degrade drinking water quality and reduce forage for wildlife and big game that is important to the economy of the City of Bozeman. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Commission of the City of Bozeman, Montana: Urges the Gallatin National Forest to adopt a Travel Management Plan that will ensure the vitality of the local economy and will protect roadless lands as the heritage of present and future generations by managing them as non-motorized. This resolution also declares that the City of Bozeman supports the management of the Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area to protect its wilderness qualities, as prescribed by Congressional mandate.
