Commission Memorandum
.
REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission
FROM: Thom White- Park and Cemetery Superintendent
Ron Dingman- Park and Recreation Director
Chuck Winn- Assistant City Manager
SUBJECT: “Run Dog Run” Single Use Dog Park
MEETING DATE: August 23, 2010
AGENDA ITEM TYPE: Action Item
RECOMMENDATION: Authorize the Run Dog Run group to construct 2-70 foot by 110
foot- single use exercise areas in the northwest portion of the Softball Complex.
BACKGROUND: The Single use Dog/Owner park concept was presented by the Run Dog
Run organization as an alternative to the typical off-leash dog park. (Currently, there is an off-
leash area at the Softball Complex.) The Run Dog Run exercise areas will be designed to allow
one person and their dog in at a time, typically fifteen to twenty minutes. The concept helps
address dogs that do not do well in dog parks, smaller breeds, older dogs and young and elderly
people who may not be comfortable around groups of unfamiliar dogs. It also offers a training
area for owners and their pets, away from the distraction of other dogs. The Recreation and
Parks Advisory Board voted to approve the Run Dog Run proposal during their July 8,
2010 monthly meeting
UNRESOLVED ISSUES: Potential conflicts between animals entering and leaving the areas,
as well as owner conflicts and compliance with usage time and signage.
ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the commission
FISCAL EFFECTS: No cost to the City as the Run Dog Run, 501c3 not for profit, has agreed
to design, construct and maintain, including dog waste management and removal, each of the
two exercise areas located on the northwest portion of the Softball Complex. Parks Staff, The
Recreation and Parks Advisory Board and Run Dog Run have mutually agreed to re-evaluate the
program if conflict or maintenance issues arise.
