HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-10 Bozeman Breeze Newsletter.pdfpublic.. The future of lowering
emissions belongs to residential
and new housing. This area is
strongly represented by Anders
Lewendal, Dawn Smith and Daryl
Nourse, providing experience in
sustainable housing and practices.
In addition to housing, energy is
another area of focus. Mel Kotur
represents North Western Ener-
gy's role in the community and
understands the intricacies of
energy efficiency and conserva-
tion. Lee Hazelbaker is the voice
of Bozeman’s public transporta-
tion and how it can play a power-
ful part in reducing transporta-
tion emissions. Finally, Chris
Naumann represents the heart of
Bozeman: the downtown, and
how we can make a clean future
for the core of our City.
These members are passionate at
what they do, and we are fortu-
nate for their help in spearhead-
ing an environmentally healthy
future for Bozeman.
The City of Bozeman is grabbing
Climate Change by the horns, so
to speak. Hattie Baker, the
City’s Sustainability Consultant
searched every niche of the com-
munity to locate the top experts
in every sector. From residential,
energy, large corporations, to
active citizens. The plan was
simple- find professionals in their
field and those passionate about
climate change, get them under
one roof and brainstorm ways to
lower greenhouse gas emissions!
Since the Mayor’s Climate Pro-
tection Agreement was adopted
in 2006, the City has been lead-
ing the effort to reduce green
house gases; now it’s the com-
munity’s turn.
Looking at the players in the
community, we wanted involve-
ment from the following: Mayor
Kaaren Jacobson backed the
Climate Action Plan since 2008;
now the plan is back in the
hands of the original signer,
Mayor, Jeff Krauss. Representing
MSU, a microcosm in its own
right, Jeff Butler, Dan Stevenson,
and his team are conducting their
own emissions inventory. Along
with MSU, representing the Bo-
zeman’s public schools, Kevin
Barre can provide insight on
large scale efficiency and opera-
tions, Bozeman Deaconess Hos-
pital , represented by LeRoy
Wilson, brings practicality and
cost-benefits to the commercial
sector. Scott Bischke, Mary
Cloud Ammons and Otto Pohl
are concerned for Bozeman’s
climate future and devote their
time and ideas to achieve sustain-
ability. The experts in public
service, John Vincent and Bill
Murdock are in tune with local
citizen concerns due to a
longstanding relationship with the
The Task Force’s objective is to
establish a goal, or target, to
reduce emissions. Sound easy?
Think not! Members of the Task
Force are researching best prac-
tices from other communities
across the US, such as Boulder,
CO and Burlington, VT to deter-
mine what works and lessons to
learn from. The group also takes
into account a growing popula-
tion, a tough economy and the
community’s input. The residential
and commercial sector, which made
for 78% of Bozeman’s emissions in
2008, is the leading source of green
house gases. If the Task Force can
determine an obtainable number the
City can embrace, a cleaner and
sustainable future is within reach.
The Mayor’s Task Force meets
on the second Thursday of the
month at 6PM in the city com-
mission meeting room art City Hall.
