STUDENT PROFILE: A. Assessment of current strengths (knowledge, skills, values) See attached CV. B. Assessment of current limitations (knowledge, skills, values) See attached CV. C. Career goals Obtain employment with local government or non profit agency. D. Experiences desired during this internship Establish relationships with City of Bozeman employees and elected officials; learn City processes, systems and policies; perform research and discovery regarding City needs in relation to professional paper; formulate overall internship prospectus and professional paper description in conjunction with Supervisor and Graduate Committee. Page 1 of 4 Final January 20, 2010 V IV. EDUCATIONAL PLAN A. Educational Goals: 1. Test theories, concepts and philosophies; 2. Test skills in management, supervision and leadership; 3. Engage in self evaluation and assessment of the internship agency; 4. Establish positive interpersonal and professional relationships; 5. Observe and develop the values and ethics of public sector /nonprofit professionals; 6. Develop, plan and carry through with "Experiences" listed per III.D. above. B. Learning Objectives: Working in conjunction with City merit employees and elected officials, gain knowledge and skills in the following areas relevant to internship goals and public sector management: 1. Research City departments, resources, systems, ordinances and policies; 2. Inventory of City resources germane to student internship and City project; 3. Research other municipalities regarding systems, ordinances and policies relative to student internship and City project; 4. Literature review utilizing City and MSU resources; 5. Utilization of qualitative methods, quantitative survey methods, measurements and interpretations and their use in public administration and policy; 6. Draft, refine and finalize research question for student's professional paper in conjunction with the City and student's Graduate Committee; 7. Based upon the research question, draft, refine and finalize City project description; 8. Origination of tentative project schedule for completion of City project description. C. Schedule The internship will be comprised of 300 hours distributed approximately as follows: 150 hours during the Spring Semester of 2010 (January 13 through May 7); and 150 hours during the first Summer Session of 2010 (May 17 through June 25). D. Deliverables No later than end of Spring Semester 2010: A prospectus of the entire internship project to be completed in partnership with the City of Bozeman, including, but not limited to: student's research question for research paper required by the MPA program germane to City project description; project description for City project; description of deliverables; tentative project schedule; milestones; and resources required. Page 2 of 4 Final January 20, 2010 End of first Summer Session 2010: Deliverable(s) in accordance with the prospectus described above. V. PERSONNEL DETAILS: A. Work schedule (days and hours) Spring 2010 Semester: Approximately 10 hours per week; schedule to be determined by the student, accounting of the hours will be by the student and submitted to the Supervisor. Summer 2010 Semester First Session: Approximately 30 hours per week; schedule to be determined by the student; accounting of the hours will be by the student and submitted to the Supervisor. B. Holiday and sick leave arrangements None. C. Other requirements /arrangements City of Bozeman email account; when available, space at City Hall may be used between the standard hours of operation (8 am 5 pm, Monday Friday except for recognized holidays). D. Compensation None. VII. EVALUATION Two evaluations will be performed, one at the end of the Spring 2010 semester (on or about May 7, 2010), and at the end of the first Summer Session 2010 (on or about June 25, 2010).
