SUBJECT: Resolution No. 4222, Declaring Support for Montana State
University – Bozeman to assume Responsibility for two-year
programming and to award two year degrees in the Gallatin
Valley.

RECOMMENDATION: Approve Resolution No. 4222, Declaring support for Montana
State University – Bozeman to assume responsibility for two-year programming and to award
two year degrees in the Gallatin Valley.
BACKGROUND: On November 9, 2009, Commissioner Jeff Krauss requested that a
Resolution be drafted supporting expanding two year post secondary opportunities in the Gallatin
Valley, prior to the Board of Regents meetings November 19 and 20th. He asked that staff
contact Robert Hietala with Montana State University College of Technology for drafting
assistance. Please see the attached resolution.

COMMISSION RESOLUTION NO. 4222
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BOZEMAN,
MONTANA, DECLARING SUPPORT FOR MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY-
BOZEMAN TO ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR TWO-YEAR PROGRAMMING
AND TO AWARD TWO-YEAR DEGREES IN THE GALLATIN VALLEY.
Whereas, The Montana Board of Regents will be meeting on November 19-20 at Montana State
University.
Whereas, Montana State University-Bozeman is requesting authorization to assume
responsibility for two-year programming and to award two-year degrees currently offered by
MSU-Great Falls in the Gallatin Valley.
Whereas, The City Commission approved the Bozeman Economic Development Plan in August
2009.
Whereas, The Bozeman Economic Development Plan recommended that the City support
education and workforce development initiatives to provide Bozeman with the qualified workers
to meet the needs of business.
Whereas, The economic development plan went on to state that the City should support efforts
of the Montana University System to expand two-year degree and job training and certification
programs in Bozeman.
Now be it resolved:
That the City Commission supports the authorization request by MSU-Bozeman to assume
responsibility for two-year programming and to award two-year degrees in Gallatin Valley.

PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Commission of the City of Bozeman, Montana, at a
regular session thereof on the 16th day of November, 2009.
