Memo to BABAB and John VanDelinder
Re: Citizen requests from 2007 Bike/Ped Survey that could be addressed through the CIP
process
From: Elizabeth Bird
Date: 11/2/09
Note that I have not included in this list problem intersections or routes where plans are
ththth
already afoot (e.g. Kagy & 11, Peach & Rouse, path from Fowler to 11, 11 & C0llege,
Willson & College).
The following represent a synthesis of requests made multiple times by respondents,
sometimes with details provided by respondents included as examples or elaboration.
Key locations to establish bike lanes or bike routes:
In the downtown area, linked to immediate neighborhoods
Mainstreet to Springhill via N. 7th
Bike lanes to and from regional park (e.g. extending the bike lanes on Oak)
Safer route to the mall from the high school and from the high school to
downtown.
Bike lanes out of town to be able to travel to rural riding areas with improved
safety
Improve North South connection on east side from Library to East Gallatin, and a
safe way for kids to ride to the Boys and Girls Club after school
Need a north-south corridor trail on west side that parallels 7th and 19th, and need
Fowler to go all the way through to Oak - currently no biking access to the Gallatin
Valley Mall or downtown
The bike lane on Babcock west of Main/Huffine needs to connect to a bike lane
into downtown. The "bike route" along Koch is a weak substitute, as 19th is very
difficult to cross on a bike during busy periods.
Make all of Peach/Durston bike friendly; ie, trim hedges, make a real bike lane.
Bike lane to BMX park
Problem spots that need attention:
rd
Kagy & S 3. (for example: “What happens to the bikers when you approach the
stop light from the South - lane disappears!!” and “is terrible to get through on a
bike”)
Access To Front Trail at Limestone and Hodgeman [anybody know where this is?]
Access across Durston via existing bike paths on either side-must hop curbs &
cross grass/mud [anybody know where this is?]
Remove rumble strips by Hastings shopping center
W. Lamme is a bike route. Make it safe!
Better routes crossing Main between 6th & 19th
th
Main & 7 (safety concerns about bike/ped crossings)
Curb cuts at the corner of 11th & Main
Intersection of 15th and Main needs a bike lane heading south and a curb-cut
accessibility ramp
Having flashing yellow lights or signal crossings for walkers/cyclists at heavy
use/fast traffic points(see the high school crossing signal as an example); specific
candidates:
th
Main & 9 (Coop to Safeway)
o
E. Main & Broadway
o
E. Main at Lindley Park
o
E. Main & Haggerty
o
th
19 & Garfield
o
th
19 & Koch
o
th
7 & Kagy
o
Church & Kagy
o
rd
College & 23
o
Willson & Garfield or Grant
o
Willson & Cleveland
o
Peach&Willson;
o
Changes in signage:
More "Share the Road" type signs and signage at congested crossings.
Remove bike lane signs on streets in the older parts of town - the street is too
narrow for vehicular traffic, and cyclists are put at risk by these inappropriate signs
Many of the streets designated as bike routes have unmarked intersections.
Better signage on trails, maps, location indicators, mileage
Maps of "best routes" for biking or walking
Routes to grocery stores
Signage for bike routes that are reasonable for downtown;
Facilities for families and children:
Paved bike trails off a major thoroughfare (for children new to bike riding)
Bike parking facilities
Can a bicyclist get in and out of the parking ramp without trying to hold a door
open at the same time? What about automatic doors?
Bogert Park has no bike racks other than small one at pool-the location should be
different-in Park and have more of them since so many families frequent there and
have small children riding bikes
Bike racks at Streamline transfer stations
Bozeman Deaconess Hospital- no bike racks
Covered bike parking at the most outlying locations of bus routes.
The transit system has bike racks on it, but I am worried to put my mountain bike
on it due to poor clamps, the racks need improvement.
For possible future organizing:
Significant policy changes:
Turn key streets into bike routes by creating obstacles to through auto traffic.
Candidates for such routes:
Two or more direct bike lane routes to campus from the north side,
o
perhaps along Grand, 5th, 8th, or 11th.
Safer pathways to MSU from Main/11th avenue, including 10th, and 8th
o
streets to MSU.
Improve ped/bike connections to MSU from SW
o
Need safe bike lane from NE to MSU, coop. Safe bike route through
o
downtown.
Make sidewalks bigger so a bike lane can be next to the sidewalk- away from cars
and plowed
Find ways to increase safety at uncontrolled intersections
Significant rights of way, infrastructure or route changes:
An east/west bike trail (not bike lane or sidewalk) anywhere in town, but hopefully
around Peach/Durston, Main, College, and/or Kagy.
Paved grid of trails linking schools, shopping centers & residential areas with all
major street crossings going over with a bridge or under with a tunnel. Example,
there are paved trails out 19th, but they have these little weird swoops and curves
in them, you have to cross 19th in an extremely dangerous intersection. Same thing
with Huffine.
Main and 19th; underpass or overpass for pedestrians & cyclists. Crossing is scary,
difficult & unpleasant
Pedestrian/cyclist tunnel or bridges at Oak and 7th intersection
Connecting paths among existing bike trails in the new subdivisions between
huffine and oak/ baxter lanes
Designated bike route through high school/CJMS property;
There should be a more well-defined route for pedestrians and bikers through the
High School property. I live west of the H.S. and feel like I'm trespassing when I
cut through the H.S. property to get down town. The new bike lanes on Durston
are a major improvement, but when you're on foot, it takes a lot longer to walk
around the H.S.
Need good bike path other than N. Rouse - through Fairgrounds?
Connection of Babcock to Durston trail to city trail system Need N-S path to
Costco from Mall
Safer connection to Pete's Hill from Kagy&Church
Need bike paths in front of Gallatin N.F. Office Bldg
Improved bike path/signage to Bozeman Beach and M-Trail
