Carbon Equivalent Analysis Bozeman WRF Phase I Expansion • ........ ......... ........ . ... ......... ..................... ii :. 1VI RLE,INC. Carbon Equivalent Calculations — Bozeman WRF Upgrade Specific Sustainable Design Concepts • Premium Efficiency Motors o All new motors provided in the facility will be 'premium' efficiency (92%)versus 'standard' efficiency(88%) motors. o All replacement motors provided in the facility will be 'premium' efficiency(92%) versus 'standard' efficiency (88%) motors. • Biosolids Hauling Reduction o City currently hauls 7,700,000 gallons of liquid sludge to the land application sites at 6,000 gallons of biosolids per load, travelling approximately 8 miles round trip with each load. This equates to approx. 1,280,trips per year and 10,300 miles of trucking. o This project will reduce the amount of trucking required, by dewatering the biosolids prior to land application. It is expected that the dewatered biosolids will be reduced by the dewatering facilities to approximately 5,400 cubic yards of material. This material will still be hauled in trucks to the land application sites, but would result in approximately 550 trips per year and 4,400 miles of trucking. This results in roughly 5,900 miles less of truck hauling at startup. Assuming that the trucks average 6 miles per gallon, I would estimate the savings to be approximately 985 gallons of fuel annually would be saved. • Existing Blower Replacement o The design team has proposed to replace the existing conventional centrifugal blowers with new blowers that have much greater efficiency. We are replacing the three 200 Hp blowers (2 operating most of the time with a third backup) that currently operate at about 83%efficiency including motor and mechanical equipment. They will be replaced with four bigger units that operate at are approximately 95%efficiency including motor and machine. The savings in energy here is the operation of 400 Hp at 95%efficiency versus at 83% efficiency. This will also increase the capacity of the plant which is needed for future growth in Bozeman. MORRISON l MAIERLE,INC • Anaerobic Digester Waste Gas Reuse o This project will re-use the waste gas to heat the existing digesters, as well as the Administration/Lab Building, the Solids Dewatering/Digester Control Building #2, the UFAT Pumping Station and possibly a Heat Recovery Ventilator in the Headworks Building. These buildings would otherwise be heated by fossil fuels if the waste gases were not utilized. The Administration/Laboratory Building will also be cooled using the waste gas via a hot water cooling system. • Micro-Turbine Power Generation o The jury is still out whether installation of a micro-turbine would make sense. At this time, there is insufficient biogas production to operate the smallest available micro-turbine which is approximately 230 KW in ` size. However, a micro-turbine could be installed now at a price of approximately$850,000-$1,000,000 and expect that they will need to augment with natural gas until approximately 2020. This would require a significant amount of financial assistance from the electrical utility for it to pencil out. Even so, there is a savings since approximately 75%of the biogas produced would be flared. These savings are not incorporated into the following carbon calculations. • Heat Recovery Ventilator in Headworks Building o The new headworks building will require significant, constant ventilation. To offset this energy use an air-to-air heat recovery unit will be considered in the design. This unit will recover a significant amount of energy from the ventilation load and will also be served with a heating loop provided by the Anaerobic Digester Waste Gas burner. These savings are not incorporated into the following carbon calculations. -aa ! ! MoRRisoN dill! s MAIERLE,INC Overview of Calculations and Assumptions Existing Facility (2005) • All existing process equipment • Existing building heating loads (taken from 2000 values provided by Hattie Baker) • Existing Biosolids Hauling Requirements (diesel fuel) • 5,800,000 gallons per day capacity Baseline Facility Expansion (2015) • All existing process equipment • Existing building heating loads (taken from 2000 values provided by Hattie Baker) • All new process equipment at standard efficiencies • Administration/Lab Building Heating and Cooling Load • Solids Dewatering/Digester Control Building#2 Heating Load • UFAT Pumping Station Building Heating Load • Existing Biosolids Hauling Requirements (diesel fuel) without dewatering • 8,500,000 gallons per day capacity Proposed Facility Expansion_(20151 • All existing process equipment(that is not being replaced) • All replacement process equipment (Blower & Sludge Pump Replacement) • All new process equipment at premium efficiencies • Anaerobic Digester Waste Gas Reuse Savings (heating/cooling load for buildings) • Existing Biosolids Hauling Requirements (diesel fuel) without dewatering • Micro-turbine Power Generation • 8,500,000 gallons per day capacity l!'MORRISON •.
