HomeMy WebLinkAboutProclamation 09- Endangered Species Day, May 15, 2009 Proclamation Mayoral Proclamation Endangered Species Day May 15, 2009 ***************************** WHEREAS, the U.S. Senate has introduced a Resolution declaring May 15, 2009 as national Endangered Speces,Day, "encouraging the people of the United States to become educated about, and aware of, threats to species, success stories in species recovery, and the opportunity to promote species conservation worldwide"; WHEREAS, "In the'United States and around the world, mare than 1,000 species are officially designated as at risk of extinction and thousands more also face a heightened risk of extinction"; WHEREAS, "The actual and potential benefits that may be'derived from many species have not yet been fully. discovered and would be permanently lost if not. for conservation efforts' ; WHEREAS, Montana is home to fourteen threatened and endangered species, including the bull trout, the grizzly bear, and the`black-footed ferret; WHEREAS, the Endangered Species Act-our safety net for fish, plants and wildlife pn the brink of extinction-has successfully saved hundreds of species from disappearing` forever, including in Montana the American bald`eagle, gray wolf, and peregrine falcon; WHEREAS, he diversity of Montana's-wildlife and habitat has inspired countless artists and writers throughout our state's history, provides millions of dollars in annual economic benefit to our economy, and is a big part of what truly makes our state the "Last Best Place"; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Kaaren Jacobson, Mayor of the City of Bozeman, in the State of Montana, do .hereby proclaim May 15, 2009 as Endangered Species Day.
