HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-9-09 Bicycle Advisory Board Minutes Bozeman Area Bicycle Advisory Board (BABAB) minutes for meeting on 9-9-09 Members Present: Molly Pickard Elizabeth Bird Baker Lyon Joseph Szasz Rebecca Gleason Guests: Joe Gilpin Elizabeth Williamson John VanDelinder Brenda Truman Ben ? 1. Approval of last month minutes 2. Ian Kleptner is looking for a local liaison for the selling of stickers for Bicycle Benefits. We would need people to touch bases with local businesses willing to offer benefits to cyclists presenting the stickers. BABAB could sell these stickers at events such as bike to work week and other events. One reason this would appeal to BABAB is the promotion of commuting and helmet wearing. We will need to contact the cities city’s legal counsel for final approval. The potential financial benefits for BABAB would be anywhere fromeither $1.25 toor $3.75 per sticker, depending on whether BABAB is selling the sticker to a store or directly to a bicyclist. Molly will get this started (working with city staff to open an account);, Rebecca and Joseph will then help implement. This was approved unanimously. th 3. Joe Gilpin then discussed the striping being done around the intersection of College and 19street. There have been some issues with the striping especially concerning a cyclist ability to travel safely th North on 19. The best idea seemed to be moving back the bike lane by 100ft and allow cyclist to determine the safest route for themselves. We also talked about access to the shared use trails where the bike lane ends. We also talked about the potential use of the “fog line” and to designate the edge of the chip sealing around next to the bike lane. We agreed to contact Tom McCormick at MDT about our concerns. Discussed also was the cities city’s desire to get College Ave. work moved to top of priority list and for MDT to do the work. A letter drafted by Elizabeth Bird directed to Mr. McCormick was unanimously approved and Elizabeth will follow up. 3. We discussed bike to school day which will take place in early October. We will need two locations/schools where volunteers will lead “trains” to the schools. Marylyn King is talking to principals and making parent contacts. Bike to school day will only involve elementary schools at this point. We also considered whether we would conduct AM/PM “trains” or just an AM event. At this point we need to organize volunteers and start publicizing the event. Rebecca or Joe will send out information and people can volunteer as able. 4. Elizabeth Williamson discussed the benefits of using Ning interactive website for BABAB information. We would need to balance the focus between BABAB and Bozeman Bike Central. Ning provides document sharing and a discussion forum. We need to find out exactlyElizabeth described how muchminimal time and effort for upkeep of the site as well as BABAB’s ability to filter comments and site rules. We also talked about whether people posting on the site would need to provide tier their name or require that they be a resident of the city/county. We decided to go with Ning because it seemed to fit our need and was free. Elizabeth Williamson will set things up and invite all BABAB members. We will discuss things further at the next meeting. 5. We then discussed BABAB updates – (from notes provided by Elizabeth Bird) a.Bill & Chad - report of maps distribution (done; Bill says: Maps have been handed out. I have a small stack left in my possession.) b.Bill – plans for bike safety training (Bill emailed the following message to Elizabeth Bird). c.Joseph had plans to attend a subdivision review meeting on the Laurel Glen subdivision – will report next meeting. There will be a Traffic 101 skills training session on the weekend of Oct 3rd in Bozeman. It is a prerequisite course to getting certified as an instructor. This course will be offered via a joint effort of the GVBC, Bike Kitchen, and me on the BABAB side. The instructor is coming over from Billings. T4America is being handled by Becky and me at this point I believe. We are both attending meetings, and we are going to write a letter to the Chronicle. 6. We then discussed the 2010 budget status. At this point the budget will increase by 3% all thought that is pending final approval which will happen sometime after in October. 7. We also discussed proposed changes to the BABAB charter. We can possiblye expanded membership and/or specify the BABAB activities may go beyond “advising”. New members could include representatives from the county commission, MDT, TCC, etc. Jason and Baker will be heading up this projecttake a first stab at drafting changes and then get Jason’s assistance. 8. We discussed next month’s meeting which will include further discussion on bike to school day, the production of resource maps, the Bike/Ped coordinator position, and the Laurel Glen subdivision.
