HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-2-09 Senior Citizen's Advisory Board Minutes Minutes of the meeting held September 2, 2009 of Bozeman Senior Citizens' Advisory Board follow. Members present were: Ken Tiahrt, Milly Gutkowski, Charlotte Kress, Patty Phillips, and Don Pierre. Members absent were: Ted Mangun, Frank Schledorn, and Eric Bryson. Meeting convened at 1:15 pm. Older American Week Discussion related to made a few important observations related to another year’s program. The Older American Luncheon at the Senior Center was again the high point of the celebration. The Senior Services Fair was excellent, well attended, and had very high quality exhibitors with valuable information. Since the National Older Americans celebration is spread over a month, there is no reason why local events should not be spread out more as well. May should be designated “Older Americans Month in Bozeman” and usually events should be limited to not more than 2 events per week. A number of excellent presentations were given this year, but were all very poorly attended, at least in part because of a tightly packed schedule. Older Americans is an event for Seniors and should be focused on the Bozeman Senior Center and would be most appropriately planned by the Senior Center, but attention should be given to a broad range of events. Senior Parking There is not a single “ Only” sign in downtown Bozeman including the new parking garage, except for the one sign at the Bozeman Library and those at the Bozeman City Hall. Apparently, the downtown businesses are still unaware of problems seniors have with walking and the need for appropriately located designated parking spaces. We will revisit this issue in future meetings. Distribution of “stimulus money” related to senior needs was discussed at some length. Bus Stops Seating as a minimum or better still, shelters at Streamline was identified as a needed improvement in Bozeman. Restroom facilities at local parks and along our trail system to complete a systematic grid with reasonable spacing should be included for special or regular funding until adequate facilities are built. “Senior Parking Only” Provision of signs and their installation in the downtown area and in various shopping centers should receive public funds, at least on a matching basis. There were no member of the public present, so there were no public comments received. Meeting adjourned. The next meeting will be October 7, 2009 at 1:15 pm in the Bozeman City Hall
