Kukulski, City Manager SUBJECT: Re-appointments to the Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board MEETING DATE: July 6, 2009 RECOMMENDATION: Re-appoint four members to the Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board. BACKGROUND: There are currently five expiring terms and three vacancies on the Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board. Four members have applied for another term. No new applications have been received at this time. The Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board was created under Chapter 2.80 of the Bozeman Municipal Code. This chapter is designed as a measure to establish a local historic preservation program designed to promote the preservation of historic and prehistoric sites, structures, objects, buildings, and historic districts by addressing historic preservation issues at the local level and integrating them into local, state, and federal planning and decision-making processes. The historic preservation program will include the identification, evaluation, and protection of historic resources within the city (Ordinance No. 1180, Section 2, 1985). The Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board shall serve in an advisory capacity to the City Commission, City-County Planning Board, Zoning Commission, and other staff members or boards seeking advice on historic preservation issues (Ordinance No. 1454, Section 2, 1998; Ordinance No. 1180, Section 3, 1985). Members are appointed to staggered two-year terms. It is to be comprised of up to fifteen members: (1) Three or four professional members with professional expertise in the disciplines of history, planning, archaeology, architecture, architecture history, historic archaeology, or other history preservation-related disciplines, such as cultural geography or cultural anthropology, provided, however, that at least one member shall be an architect holding Montana or NCARB registration; (2) Two to four members from historic districts; (3) One member from the Main Street commercial district, who "shall operate a business or own property in the neighborhood described as Main Street"; 385 (4) Four to six at-large representatives. Residence within the City shall not be a prerequisite for professional members or at-large representatives. This board is considered advisory, although it is generally responsible for overseeing the operation of the Historic Preservation Office. There are currently five expiring terms and four re-applying applicants. My interests lie in cultural heritage, historic preservation and the importance of engaging the public in the history of their community and built environment. I was born and raised in Livingston, MT and attended Montana State University, receiving a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology and a Master's degree in history. Upon graduation, I moved to San Diego, CA and worked at the La Jolla historical society, trying to save historic beach cottages from demolition. From there I moved the Wells Fargo History Museum and worked as a curator for five years. I moved back to Bozeman three years ago and currently work for Project Archaeology, a national heritage education program located at Montana State University. My position at Project Archaeology involves public outreach and education. I work specifically with educators and students to promote cultural heritage and archaeological site stewardship.
