SUBJECT: Appointment to the Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board MEETING DATE: April 20, 2009
RECOMMENDATION: Appoint one new member to the Bozeman Historic Preservation
Advisory Board. BACKGROUND: There are currently four vacancies on the Bozeman Historic Preservation
Advisory Board due to the resignation of two at-large members, resignation of a neighborhood
member and the resignation of the newly appointed Main Street representative. There is one new
applicant that qualifies for the at-large position. This position expires June 30, 2010. The Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board has unanimously voted to recommend the
applicant for appointment.
The Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board was created under Chapter 2.80 of the Bozeman Municipal Code. This chapter is designed as a measure to establish a local historic preservation program designed to promote the preservation of historic and prehistoric sites,
structures, objects, buildings, and historic districts by addressing historic preservation issues at
the local level and integrating them into local, state, and federal planning and decision-making
processes. The historic preservation program will include the identification, evaluation, and protection of historic resources within the city (Ordinance No. 1180, Section 2, 1985).
The Bozeman Historic Preservation Advisory Board shall serve in an advisory capacity to the
City Commission, City-County Planning Board, Zoning Commission, and other staff members or
boards seeking advice on historic preservation issues (Ordinance No. 1454, Section 2, 1998; Ordinance No. 1180, Section 3, 1985).
Members are appointed to staggered two-year terms. It is to be comprised of up to fifteen
members:
(1) Three or four professional members with professional expertise in the disciplines of history, planning, archaeology, architecture, architecture history, historic archaeology, or other history
preservation-related disciplines, such as cultural geography or cultural anthropology, provided,

however, that at least one member shall be an architect holding Montana or NCARB registration;
(2) Two to four members from historic districts;
(3) One member from the Main Street commercial district, who "shall operate a business or own
property in the neighborhood described as Main Street"; (4) Four to six at-large representatives.
Residence within the City shall not be a prerequisite for professional members or at-large
representatives. This board is considered advisory, although it is generally responsible for
overseeing the operation of the Historic Preservation Office.
There are currently four vacancies and one applicant.

SUBJECT: BHPAB appointments
MEETING DATE: Monday, April 20, 2009
RECOMMENDATION: That the City Commission appoint Courtney Gunderson to the Bozeman
Historic Preservation Advisory Board.
BACKGROUND: The Bozeman Historic Preservation Board currently has four opening for members; one
“Neighborhood” representative, one “Main Street” representative and two “At-Large” representative. The
BHPAB reviewed Ms. Gunderson’s application at their regularly scheduled board meeting on March 23, and
unanimously voted to recommend Ms. Gunderson’s application for appointment. Ms. Gunderson will fill one
of the “At-Large” positions, although her professional background in the Historic American Buildings Survey
will add invaluable knowledge to the board.
Please see the current BHPAB member list attached to this memo for further information.
UNRESOLVED ISSUES: Planning Staff is not aware of any unresolved issues at this time.
FISCAL EFFECTS: All of the BHPAB members donate time to the City of Bozeman, which we use to
match a grant from the State Historic Preservation Office.
