Members Present: Jenny Haubenreiser, Marty Kent, Becky Franks, Glenn Puffer, Eris Miller, Jenna
Caplette
Guests: Ashley Lee, Kaitlyn Peot -Wellness Community Interns and MSU students
Membership Update: Jenny asked the two visiting MSU students if they would be interested in serving
on the CAC. Since both students are close to graduation, they offered to look for a volunteer instead,
ideally from one of the Greek houses.
Discussion Items
The group talked about the City brochure updates (as they relate to RBS for special events). Eris
explained recent organizational changes re: the oversight of RBS and that she will now be
overseeing the training. Thus the brochure will require further edits. Eris will work with Marty
on this to ensure the information is up to date. Eris also announced that Alcohol & Drug Services
of Gallatin County has moved to their new location.
Discussion continued about RBS training, including the possibility of making this training
mandatory for servers and business owners who fail compliance checks. At present, training is
recommended but RBS training is not currently mandatory in Montana. Jenny mentioned.
relevant discussions in Helena, including a formal recommendation that will be made to the ICC
to have legislation drafted to address this. RBS training was also discussed as a good tool for
Greek organizations on campus.
The remainder of the meeting was spent discussing the U.S. Surgeon General visit to MSU
(focus on underage drinking prevention and collegiate prevention strategies). Jenny pointed out
that his visit coincided with the wide media release of the Amethyst Initiative (collegiate
president initiative to lower the drinking age to 18). President Gamble made it clear during the
SG visit that he does not support this. During his speech the SG cited medical data and other
research that supports the protective features of the 21 age law. The SG also stressed that
preventing alcohol-related harm is a "shared responsibility" -meaning that campuses and
community stakeholders need to work together to improve the health and. safety of all members
of the campus and community. The SG's perspective was a good validation of the CAC.
CAC members who were in attendance at the SG event were largely positive about the
experience. This was an opportunity to have a broader dialogue with multiple stakeholders. The
visit also served as a strong affirmation for the work of prevention, which is generally invisible.
It was also acknowledged that something more needs to be done to utilize the momentum (by
way of enacting some type of change). Glenn reported using this as a means to increase student
leadership participation on campus -members of ASMSU leadership were at the event and
expressed verbal support of campus and community prevention.
• CAC members present decided that the proposed social host ordinance for Bozeman would be a
good means to continue the support and momentum identified during the SG event. Jenny will
contact Susan W. and bring more information about the proposed. ordinance to the next meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:30. The next meeting will be on October 14`h at 4 p.m.
