Endangered Species Day

WHEREAS, the U.S. Senate has introduced Senate resolution 520, designating May 16,
2008 as national Endangered Species Day, "encouraging the people of the United States
to become educated about, and aware of, threats to species, Success stories in species
recovery, and the appartunity to promote species conservation worldwide" [quoted from
Senate Resolution 520];
WHEREAS, "In the United States and around the world, more than 1,000 species are
officially designated as at risk of extinction and thousands moxe also face a heightened
risk of extinction" [quoted from Senate Resolution 520];
WHEREAS, "The actual and ,potential benefits that may be derived from many species
have not yet been fully discovered and would be permanently lost if not for conservation
efforts" [quoted from Senate Resolution 520];
WHEREAS, Montana is home to fourteen threatened and endangered species, including
the bull trout, the grizzly beaz, and the black-footed .ferret;
WHEREAS, the Endangered Species Act-cur safety net far fish, plants and wildlife on
the brink of extinctian-has successfully saved hundreds of species from disappearing
forever, including in Montana the American bald eagle, gray wolf, and peregrine falcon;
WHEREAS, the diversity of Montana's wildlife and habitat has inspired countless
artists and writers throughout our state's history, provides millions of dollars in annual
economic benefit to our economy, and is a big part of what truly makes our state the
"Last Best Place";
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Kaaren Jacobson, Mayor of the City
of Bozeman, in the State of Montana, do hereby proclaim May 16, 2008 as Endangered
