Old and New Business
(1) Bozeman ReCycles. The project is moving ahead, and currently has eight
mechanics rotating through, working two hours each. The program starts this Friday.
Emily met with Pete MacFadyen of the Big Sky Youth Empowerment Project
(http://www.byep.org) who is interested in starting a similar project with youth, except
culminating with new bicycles.
(2) Fowler Avenue. BABAB recommends that a connection between the Bozeman
Ponds and the Regional Park and schools should be made. Both bicycle lanes and
shared use paths should be installed. Jon will craft the formal recommendation and run
by the Board at the next meeting.
(3) Survey of bike friendly towns. Board members will e-mail Matt R. their findings so
that they can be compiled into one document. One important Web site for all to check
out is http://www.bicyclinginfo.org.
David presented his findings on Portland, OR. One important observation is that
Portland has consistent language and general, but clear facility recommendations.
Bicycle parking is also an important component of their planning. Non-governmental
organizations are actively recruited and involved. David suggested that Portland’s use
of timelines, future goals and benchmarks could be applied in Bozeman.
Jon reported on Davis, CA (the sole Platinum Award winner at
http://www.bicyclefriendlycommunity.org/). This city has a huge amount of bicycle
transportation. A recent survey indicated that 20% of all daily trips are made on
bicycles. As a result, Jon felt that much of their approach to bicycling doesn’t apply to
Bozeman. For instance, California reserves $5M in their budget for bicycle projects.
Similar to Portland, Davis has a comprehensive bicycle master plan.
Matt J. made contact with Phil Smith, Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator in Missoula.
He will get more information about codes relating to lanes and parking requirements.
Matt R. did not have a report on San Luis Obispo yet.
Emily reported on Eugene, Oregon. Some notable aspects of their approach to
bicycling includes a plan for lighting on bicycle paths, and a program using parent
volunteers to ride with school students to teach them safe routes.
(4) The federal Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) program
(http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/index.cfm) in Montana will be coordinated through
CTEP (Community Transportation Enhancement Program)
Next Meeting:
January 3, 2006, 6:00 pm, Alfred Stiff Professional Building.
