The board agreed on appointing Jon Henderson as Chair, Chad Bailey as Vice Chair, and Emily Harrington as Secretary. The by-laws will be checked for official terms of these offices. (2) Bike to Work and School Week (http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/bikemonth/) will be May 14-18, 2007. The Advocacy Subcommittee will be working on this starting in January. The success of the ride-by breakfast at the Co-Op will be built on. Some other ideas were brought up and include a Commuter Challenge, modeled after an event in Missoula where a bicycle commuter races a car commuter on “errands” in town, strictly following all traffic laws. Ideas for the week can be forwarded to David B., Matt R. or Emily. (3) Matt R. heard back from the Sweet Pea Committee regarding the valet bike parking proposal. They will consider the idea at their January meeting and contact Matt with their decision. (4) There were no updates from the Bozeman Bike Kitchen (http://www.bozemanbikekitchen.org/). (5) Matt R. informed the board that Gallatin Valley Love INC (http://www.loveincgc.org/) has room for volunteers wishing to repair used bikes to be used in their ministry. As it is an interdenominational Christian ministry, volunteers must sign confidentiality and statement-of-faith forms. Interested bike mechanics can contact Jim Good at 587-1433. (6) The Safe Routes to Schools (http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/) project is underway, with grant proposals due the end of December. A pilot project at Emily Dickenson Elementary School will take place. (7) Transportation Plan Update. Of the 33 pages making up the draft scope of services, 22 deal with pedestrian and bike issues. Bike Board members need to regularly keep up with the Plan and make sure that bike/ped issues are followed through on. Jon has done a great job assembling all the important resources at http://www.bozeman.net/commission/bike_board_resources.aspx The consultant hired to write the Plan update has proposed a cost of $250K, and the state/city/county portion does not quite cover that amount. Jon offered the balance of the BABAB budget ($43K) to make up the difference. The consultant hired is Robert Peccia & Associates (http://www.rpa-hln.com/), with Alta Planning and Design (http://www.altaplanning.com/) as the sub-consultant for bike/ped issues. (8) Our proposal to have a travel & advocacy budget as part of the Board was not approved. Bike Board members will try again next year. (9) For a good overview of why bike lanes are so important in the ‘big’ transportation picture, members are requested to read the article “Benefits of Bike Lanes” on the Bike Board Resources page. Next Meeting: January 2, 2007, 6:00 pm, Alfred Stiff Professional Building.
