The group discussed the current Bike Route Network, and planning for the future. The board generally agreed that most path / lane conflicts should stay that way in the plan – with both facilities present. The group is in favor of amending the current transportation plan with the current Bike Route Network. Jon will take our current plan to city personnel. The next Transportation Coordinating Committee (TCC) meeting is October 26, 2005. (2) Emily discussed the progress of the youth bike program. (This program encourages cycling in youth by teaching repair skills using donated bicycles). January through March will be instructor training where the volunteers will learn repair skills as well as being trained in working with youth. March through May, for eight weeks, will be the classes for youth – three per week with three instructors per class. Current needs include (1) space (the armory is no longer an option) that is secure, long term, with plumbing and heating, and centrally located, and (2) a qualified bike mechanic to do the instructor training. (3) Dave Smith of the Bozeman Chamber has approached David about getting the bike route on the new city map. David will follow up. (4) David gave an update on the College / Huffine project funded by CTEP (Community Transportation Enhancement Program - http://www.mdt.mt.gov/business/ctep/). All indications are that the state will approve the project. (5) David and Emily handed out bike route maps at the Bluegrass at Bogert Park evening in August. There was some interest in the maps and a few comments were taken, mostly in the area of specific bike facility needs. (6) Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) is a new, funded federal program that will be making funds available to states to improve bike facilities near schools. This should provide a great future opportunity for BABAB to advise on applications and planning. The League of American Bicyclists has provided a document summarizing the Federal Transportation Bill and the SR2S program. The document is on the BABAB Web site at http://www.bozeman.net/bikeboard/docs/safetea.pdf. (7) Jon reminded the board of the Bike Friendly Community Campaign, run by the League of American Bicyclists. http://www.bicyclefriendlycommunity.org/. BABAB-ers are encouraged to look at the site, and consider the potential for Bozeman participating in the program. September 6, 2005 is the next meeting. 6:00 pm, Alfred Stiff Professional Building.
